Mercor AI Training Work: Understand the Tasks and Workflow

Mercor matches domain experts with contract work that trains and evaluates AI. Understand the task types, check the instructions, and keep personal lessons without copying private work.

Mercor AI training work means using your own expertise to help create or evaluate material for AI systems. Mercor's expert site (opens in a new tab) describes contract opportunities involving tasks such as rating model outputs, writing expert examples, and applying domain standards. It is work performed by people through a matching and assignment process, rather than a personal AI notebook or a model you train in a chat.

The learning worth keeping is your own general process: how you check an explanation, organize your time, or recognize a gap in your knowledge. Tools like fenbs can keep those high-level lessons across devices and connected AI apps. The private task, its answers, and the client's material belong outside that personal record.

What kinds of work does an AI trainer do?

The role is easier to understand by separating three broad activities in Mercor's description: creating expert examples, reviewing model responses, and evaluating quality against standards. A particular assignment may involve a narrower task. Read its instructions rather than assuming that every opportunity uses the same method or asks for the same deliverable.

How to think about the broad task types
Task typeThe contribution you makeA question to ask before starting
Expert examplesUse your subject knowledge to produce the requested material. What result and format do the instructions require?
Output reviewInspect a model response using your own expertise.Which claims need checking, and what evidence is allowed?
Quality evaluationApply the supplied standards and make your own judgment. How should I handle an ambiguous case or missing information?

For a wholly fictional practice example, imagine reviewing a public explanation of a basic concept in your field. You could check whether the conclusion follows from the stated facts and whether important qualifications are missing. That illustrates the skill of review; it is not a Mercor task, scoring rule, or sample assessment.

How do you find the relevant role and instructions?

Mercor describes creating a profile, taking AI assessments, and being matched to appropriate work. Its public expert page provides Search roles and Start working entry points. Review the requirements for the actual opportunity, because qualifications and prior experience needs differ by role. An application is not a contract or a promise of available hours.

The Mercor documentation index (opens in a new tab) lists Apply for a Job, Assessments, Project Onboarding, and Getting Started guides. Use those guides and the instructions attached to your assignment to resolve the next step. Do not rely on another contractor's description of a different assignment as your operating instructions.

Our separate Mercor interview preparation guide covers preparing your own examples for the application process. For general practice before an application, see interview preparation prompts, while keeping the applicable assessment rules in control.

What should you check before accepting or starting work?

Ask for enough information to distinguish an interesting topic from a workable assignment. Confirm the task scope, required availability, payment terms, permitted tools, and how questions should be raised. Mercor states that project lengths and scope can change, so an initial description should not be treated as a guarantee of continuing work.

  • Expertise: can you perform the requested work yourself and recognize when a question exceeds your knowledge?
  • Instructions: do you understand the expected deliverable, quality requirements, and submission process for this assignment?
  • Tools and confidentiality: which systems are approved, and what information must stay within them?
  • Practical terms: are the agreed payment terms, time expectations, and communication route clear before work starts?

Displayed opportunities and general descriptions are starting points for those questions. Do not infer your individual earnings or workload from a public average. If a term is unclear, resolve it through the assignment's support route before relying on it for your schedule or income planning.

How can you approach a task carefully?

Use a deliberate read, work, and check routine within the approved environment. The following steps are a general approach to expert work, not a substitute for Mercor's assignment instructions. Where the assignment specifies a different procedure, follow that procedure.

  1. Read the complete instructions before starting. Identify the requested judgment or example and any limits on tools and sources.
  2. Separate what the supplied material establishes from what you would otherwise have to assume. Raise unresolved questions through the approved route.
  3. Do the required thinking yourself. Apply your domain knowledge and the permitted evidence rather than asking another AI to make the judgment.
  4. Check that your explanation supports your conclusion and that the deliverable follows the required format. Keep all drafts and submissions within approved systems.
  5. Afterward, identify a general skill you want to improve without copying the task, the standards, or the work you produced.

For example, a personal skill goal could be to distinguish a plausible conclusion from one supported by the evidence. Practice it later on unrelated public material. Do not recreate the assignment at home to make the lesson more concrete. Our AI capabilities and work limits guide explains why a convincing answer and a verified result are different things.

Can you use another AI to help with the assignment?

Read Mercor's LLM Usage Policy (opens in a new tab) before using another AI. It allows limited grammar, diction, and light phrasing help that preserves your own ideas. It prohibits using a large language model, or LLM, to evaluate model-response quality, provide your justifications, or predict code behavior and runtime results.

That rule prevents a common misunderstanding: working on AI does not mean you may delegate the required expertise to an AI. A writing aid and a substitute evaluator serve different roles. Follow any additional instructions for your assignment, and ask for clarification when you cannot tell whether a proposed use is allowed.

Keep skill development separate from the deliverable. An AI-assisted learning routine can help you study a public concept in your own time. It does not authorize uploading private material or asking a tutor to complete a live task.

What can go in a personal learning record?

Mercor's Social Media and Internet Use Policies (opens in a new tab) allow high-level, non-confidential descriptions while restricting disclosure and reuse of work. For an external personal record, use a conservative boundary: your own generic reflections and public resources only. Do not copy task prompts, responses, evaluation rubrics, screenshots, client identities, or deliverables.

A useful entry might say: I should check the evidence for each important claim before revising the wording. Another might say: practice explaining uncertainty with a new example from a public textbook. These notes describe a personal habit without revealing the content or outcome of an assignment.

Do not save a private example and merely remove the client's name. The task itself can still be private material, and the policy does not become permission to reuse it. If you cannot express the lesson without reconstructing that work, keep it out of the external record. fenbs can retain the general lesson, together with the next safe practice step.

How fenbs helps

Never make the same mistake twice

When something goes wrong, or right, save what you learned in fenbs. The next AI you connect reads it before it starts.

How to keep your own learning progress with fenbs

  1. Create a free account.
  2. Write one general skill you want to improve. Leave out the assignment, its instructions, client information, and everything you produced for the work.
  3. Add a public resource and an unrelated practice exercise you created yourself. Save your own learning goal and the question you still need to understand.
  4. Before stopping, write the next practice step. Continue from that point on any device or in another connected AI, without bringing private task material along.

fenbs is useful for a personal learning record that contains only material you may share. It does not carry out Mercor tasks or replace Mercor's approved work systems. See the AI at work library for other ways to organize the useful, shareable part of your work.

Questions people ask.

Do I need previous AI work to apply?

Mercor says prior AI experience is not always required, but qualifications vary by role. Review the actual opportunity and compare its requirements with your own expertise.

Is every Mercor role a full-time job?

No. Mercor describes contract AI project opportunities. Read the terms of the actual role rather than assuming full-time employment or guaranteed hours.

Can an LLM supply my explanation of an evaluation?

Mercor's LLM policy prohibits using an LLM to provide your justifications or evaluate model-response quality. The required expertise and judgment need to remain your own.

Can I keep a good task example if I remove identifying details?

Do not copy private task examples or deliverables into an outside learning tool. Keep only generic personal reflections and public resources, without reconstructing the private work.
