Qlik MCP Server: Connect AI to Governed Business Analysis

A Qlik MCP server lets an AI assistant query Qlik and Qlik Sense apps, retrieve governed metrics, and run associative searches through a standard tool call. Here is how to set up the connection, verify what the AI is reading, and keep agreed metric definitions and source links in one shared record.

A Qlik MCP server connects an AI assistant to Qlik or Qlik Sense apps through a standard tool call, letting it query the Qlik Engine API, retrieve master items, read hypercubes, and run associative searches without leaving the AI interface. Qlik's strength is governed data: master dimensions and measures defined by a data owner, applied consistently across the app. Tools like fenbs keep the agreed business definitions and source links that explain where each metric comes from, so the AI and the team interpret the numbers the same way.

Qlik Cloud and Qlik Sense both expose the Qlik Engine API (opens in a new tab) and a REST API for app management. Community MCP servers use these APIs. Check the MCP server directory and the Qlik developer community for available packages.

Connect an AI assistant to Qlik

  1. In Qlik Cloud, create an API key for a service account with read access to the apps the AI will query. In Qlik Sense Enterprise on Windows, use a JWT or NTLM credential for a dedicated service account.
  2. Install or deploy a Qlik MCP server package. Configure it with the Qlik Cloud tenant URL (or Qlik Sense server URL), the API key, and the app IDs the server should expose.
  3. Add the server to your AI client's MCP config. See MCP server configuration for the format.
  4. Restart the AI client and verify the Qlik tools appear. Ask the AI to list the master measures in a specific app as a first check.
  5. Confirm the numbers the AI returns match what you see in the Qlik app for the same selections and filters before using the connection for real analysis.

What the AI can query in Qlik

Through the Qlik Engine API, an AI assistant can make selections, read hypercube data (the numbers behind a chart), retrieve master items (governed dimensions and measures), apply bookmarks, and clear selections. This covers most business questions: what is the current quarter revenue by region, which products drove the variance, how do the top ten customers compare.

Write access — creating or modifying apps, editing master items, or reloading data — should not be given to an AI assistant unless there is a specific, supervised use case. Keep the service account to read-only permissions.

Verify metrics before acting on them

Qlik's associative model means the same measure can return different numbers depending on which selections are active. When the AI returns a metric, check which filters were applied. A revenue figure without the subsidiary and period filters you expected may be meaningfully different from the one you intended to query.

Master measures in Qlik have names, but names can be informal. "Sales" might mean gross or net depending on which app defined it. Before giving the AI permission to build analyses on a metric, verify its definition in the Qlik master item editor and record that definition in your project context.

Keep source links and metric definitions available

Qlik apps sit at the end of a data pipeline. Behind each master measure is a data model, a load script, and one or more source systems. When an analyst asks "where does this number come from?", the answer is not in the AI chat or even in the Qlik app — it is in the data pipeline documentation and the agreed business definitions.

fenbs keeps those references as Links in the project, alongside the agreed metric definitions and the decisions about how to interpret edge cases. When an AI session surfaces a number that looks wrong, the next analyst can trace it from the business definition to the source without starting from scratch.

The Qlik API behavior differs between Qlik Cloud and Qlik Sense Enterprise on Windows. Qlik Cloud uses REST APIs and OAuth 2.0; Qlik Sense Enterprise on Windows uses the Engine API over WebSocket with options including JWT and Windows Authentication. A Qlik MCP server written for one deployment may not work for the other without modification. Before setting up, confirm which deployment your organization uses and whether the package you choose explicitly supports it. Check the Qlik developer documentation (opens in a new tab) for the API differences, and record the deployment type and API version as a rule in the project context so new team members and assistants start with the correct configuration.

How fenbs helps

Keep metric definitions and source links where every session can find them

Record agreed metric definitions, filter conventions, and data source references as Decisions and rules and Links in fenbs. When the AI returns a number, the analyst can trace it to the agreed definition without opening Slack or searching old emails. Add follow-up tasks when a number needs investigation.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account and add a project for the Qlik analysis work.
  2. Add the primary Qlik apps as links with the app name, Qlik Cloud URL, and the master items it covers.
  3. Record agreed metric definitions as Decisions and rules: what "Sales" means in each app, which subsidiaries are included, how the current period is defined.
  4. Connect your AI app to fenbs at Integrations. It reads the definitions before running any analysis.
  5. When analysis surfaces a discrepancy or a finding that needs investigation, add a task to the board with the details so the next session picks it up.

fenbs does not connect to Qlik directly. It holds the definitions and references your analyst and assistant need; the Qlik MCP server handles the live data queries.

Questions people ask.

Does Qlik have an official MCP server?

Qlik has been building AI integrations for the Qlik Cloud platform. Check the Qlik developer documentation at help.qlik.com and the Qlik community for current MCP or AI assistant integration options. Community servers using the Qlik Engine API are also available.

What is the difference between Qlik and Qlik Sense for MCP purposes?

Qlik Sense is the product name for Qlik's analytics platform, available as Qlik Cloud (SaaS) and Qlik Sense Enterprise on Windows (on-premises). Both expose the Engine API and REST APIs that MCP servers use. Authentication differs: Qlik Cloud uses API keys; Qlik Sense Enterprise on Windows uses JWT or NTLM.

How do I make sure the AI uses the right filters?

Record the agreed filter conventions as Decisions and rules in your project context: which subsidiaries to include, how the current period is defined, whether to exclude certain bookmarks. The AI reads those rules before running any analysis.

Can the AI create or modify Qlik apps?

The Qlik REST API supports app creation and modification. Do not give those permissions to an AI service account unless there is a specific supervised use case. Keep the service account to read-only by default.

Where should agreed metric definitions be stored?

In a shared project context tool such as fenbs, as Decisions and rules. Record the metric name, its definition, which Qlik app and master item it corresponds to, and any edge cases. This makes the definition findable and correctable without opening the Qlik master item editor every time.
