How to use SambaNova models in Cline

Configure SambaNova as Cline’s model provider, use the documented compatibility fallback when needed, and compare models with a small repeatable task.

Updated 5 min read

To use SambaNova models in Cline, open Cline in VS Code, choose SambaNova under API Provider, enter your SambaCloud key, select a Model, and click Done. SambaNova’s Cline guide (opens in a new tab) also provides an OpenAI Compatible fallback. Test the setup on a small task before asking it to change important code. fenbs helps keep the tested configuration, findings, and next step available when you continue in another session or AI.

What do you need for this setup?

The vendor’s guide calls for VS Code, its Cline extension, and a SambaCloud account with an API key. SambaCloud is the current hosted-product name used in SambaNova’s documentation. You are configuring Cline to use that inference service: the service runs the model that produces the answers.

Get the key through the route in SambaNova’s API keys and URLs guide (opens in a new tab). Save it securely when you create it, because the guide says you cannot view it again. Enter secrets only in the appropriate private credential fields, and keep them out of prompts, code, screenshots, and comparison notes.

Prepare a small working folder you are allowed to send to the service. Decide what a correct result looks like before testing. For example, you might ask for an explanation of a short input-validation function, then a proposed test for one missing case. The point is to check the complete workflow with a result you can inspect.

How do you configure the native SambaNova provider?

  1. Launch VS Code and open the Cline panel from the sidebar.
  2. Click the settings icon in the Cline panel. In API Provider, select SambaNova.
  3. Enter your SambaCloud API key in the credential field.
  4. Choose a model from the Model dropdown, then click Done to save.
  5. Open a new task in Cline and describe your small test. Review proposed actions and approve each step before file edits or terminal commands, as the vendor’s guide directs.

Copy the model name you actually selected into your private test record. Model IDs can change, so an example from an older tutorial is not a permanent choice. Keep your first attempt simple enough that you can distinguish a connection problem from a difficult coding request.

You do not need to compare every model before establishing one working setup. First confirm that the request receives a useful answer and that the proposed actions match your instructions. Then decide whether a second model is worth testing on the same job.

When should you use the OpenAI Compatible fallback?

SambaNova documents the fallback for provider connection errors or a model missing from the dropdown. It changes how Cline reaches SambaCloud; it does not switch your inference provider to OpenAI. Follow that documented route rather than combining endpoint details from unrelated tools.

  1. In API Provider, select OpenAI Compatible.
  2. Set Base URL to https://api.sambanova.ai/v1.
  3. Enter the SambaCloud API key in the private key field.
  4. In Model ID, enter the exact current model name from SambaCloud.
  5. Repeat the same small test, and record whether this route worked.

For a SambaStack deployment, the API key and endpoint come from your administrator instead of this hosted-service recipe. Keep those setups distinct. A model that produces a short text answer has passed a connection check; it still needs the coding and tool checks relevant to the work you want it to do.

How do you compare models on a real coding task?

Keep the source files, prompt, allowed actions, and expected result fixed. A useful comparison changes the model while holding those other things steady. If you rewrite the task between attempts, you are also measuring the rewrite. The AI model comparison guide explains the broader evaluation question.

A repeatable first coding task
Read the supplied validation function. Explain its behavior for blank input. Propose one focused test and the smallest change needed if the behavior is wrong. Do not edit files or run commands until I review the proposal. Report what you could not verify.

After each attempt, check whether the explanation matches the source and whether the proposed test checks the intended behavior. If you approve an edit, inspect the actual change and the check output. Record a concrete result such as “blank-input case handled; proposed change also altered an unrelated error message,” rather than calling an answer impressive.

Use the same standard when the first answer is wrong. A clear error and a successful correction are useful findings. Save the evidence and any remaining uncertainty in fenbs, so a later comparison does not rely on your memory of which model seemed better.

What if authentication or tool use fails?

For authentication errors, the Cline guide recommends checking the copied key for extra spaces or line breaks and regenerating it when necessary. For connection problems, it recommends checking the internet connection, confirming the account is active, and reopening and saving the settings. Change one thing at a time, then repeat your small request.

Keep a missing model separate from a missing tool capability. SambaNova’s FastMCP guide (opens in a new tab) describes client code that connects tools to a tool-capable model. MCP is a standard way for an AI app to use outside tools. The client manages that connection; the hosted model endpoint does not independently discover arbitrary tool-server URLs.

For your coding check, inspect both the requested action and the observed result. A model suggesting a tool call is not proof that the client executed it successfully. Record any refusal or failure honestly. The AI model evaluation guide helps turn those observations into a consistent check instead of an unsupported ranking.

How to keep the comparison with fenbs

Keep the work so you can carry on from exactly where you left off, on any device and in another AI. Save the tested provider route, current model name, task, checked result, and next action. These are the pieces another assistant needs; it does not need your secret or every sentence from the old conversation.

  1. Create a free account.
  2. Add a task for the coding change or comparison, and say what a correct result should do.
  3. Connect the AI app using your SambaNova model to fenbs through the connection guides. Check that your app supports the connection; SambaCloud’s model endpoint does not add it for you.
  4. Save which setup worked, what you checked, and what still failed. Ask your connected assistant to read that record before continuing and save the next step before it stops.

fenbs does not host models or configure the provider fields for you. A one-time experiment may only need a local note. For recurring work, the common record makes a model change easier to assess. Questions people ask.

Does OpenAI Compatible mean my request goes to OpenAI?

In the documented fallback, the base URL points to SambaNova and the key is your SambaCloud key. OpenAI Compatible describes the request format used by the client.

Should I save one example model ID permanently?

No. Copy the exact current model name available to you and record what you tested. Model IDs can change or be deprecated.

Can I use these hosted endpoint settings for SambaStack?

SambaStack users should obtain the local endpoint and key-generation details from their administrator. The hosted SambaCloud settings are a different setup.

Does a successful text response prove coding tools work?

No. It establishes a basic request succeeded. Review the proposed action, its execution, and the resulting files or check output before relying on tool behavior.
