How to Make a Gemini Chat Private: Settings and Limits
Use a temporary chat, review activity and memory separately, and remove public sharing links. These steps reduce reuse and exposure without promising that Google stores nothing.

To make a Gemini chat more private, use Temporary Chat where available, review Keep Activity and Memory separately, and avoid creating a public sharing link. These controls reduce saved history and personalization; they do not mean Google processes or retains nothing.
For work you need later, fenbs can hold a short, approved project record instead of a copy of the conversation. That lets you keep a useful decision without preserving the personal details or speculative discussion that surrounded it.
How do you start a Gemini chat without memory?
- Confirm the account shown in Gemini. These personal-account steps do not replace the rules your employer or school sets for a managed account.
- In the Gemini web app, choose Temporary chat next to New chat. Confirm that the temporary-chat icon appears before entering your question.
- Remove names, account numbers, credentials, and unnecessary client details from the prompt and any attachment. Use a fictional example when the real information is unnecessary.
- Finish the question in that session. Before leaving, keep only a reviewed, nonsensitive result you actually need elsewhere.
Google’s temporary-chat instructions (opens in a new tab) describe account and platform eligibility. Temporary chats do not appear in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity, cannot provide personalized responses, and cannot save information for future personalization. You lose access when you leave.
A new ordinary chat is a different choice. Starting a fresh thread alone does not establish that earlier information cannot affect the response. Check the temporary indicator instead of relying on the conversation looking empty.
How do you stop saving future Gemini activity?
On the web, open Settings & help, then Activity. Review Keep Activity and choose Turn off, or Turn off and delete activity if you also intend to remove existing activity. Google’s activity management guide (opens in a new tab) explains the choices and platform-specific paths.
Make the choice deliberately: stopping future saving and removing an earlier conversation are separate jobs. Check the date range before confirming deletion. If you need a harmless result for your own records, save that result before removing access to the conversation.
For work or school accounts, Google says a Workspace administrator controls the activity settings. Ask which account is approved for the work and what retention applies. A personal privacy switch is not permission to move organizational information into a personal account.
If your question involves a notebook or a reusable assistant configuration, see the separate guides to Gemini Notebook and Gemini Gems. Changing a chat setting should not be treated as deleting every related object.
How do you stop personalization from earlier information?
Google’s past-chat memory guide (opens in a new tab) documents Settings & help, then Personal Intelligence, then the Memory control. Turning that off concerns personalization from earlier chats. Review Activity separately if your goal also includes deleting those chats.
Then inspect your explicit instructions. Google’s remembered information and instructions guide (opens in a new tab) explains how to view, edit, delete, or disable instructions. Look for outdated project details mixed into a harmless formatting preference.
- Want a one-time conversation? Start with the temporary-chat route rather than changing several account settings for one question.
- Want future answers to stop using older chats? Review Memory and the chats supplying that information.
- Want a written instruction removed? Delete the instruction entry instead of assuming a new chat removes it.
- Want a clean project handoff? Keep an approved work summary separate from account-wide preferences.
That last distinction is where fenbs Decisions and rules help: the next connected assistant can read the approved work rule without needing the private conversation that produced it.
Could an old sharing link still expose the conversation?
Yes. Google’s chat sharing guide (opens in a new tab) says anyone with a public chat link can read and reshare it. On the web, open Settings & help, then Your public links, and delete links you no longer intend to share.
Review the conversation and its attachments before ever making such a link. Sending the link to one trusted colleague does not limit access to that colleague. For a team deliverable, share the approved result through your usual work system with the intended audience.
Deleting a link cannot recall someone’s screenshot or copied text. If sensitive information was shared, follow your organization’s incident process and describe the exposure without spreading the content further. Keep the response record factual: what was shared, which link was removed, and who needs to review the next action.
What does a private setting still leave behind?
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub (opens in a new tab) explains that temporary chats and chats with Keep Activity off have service and safety retention. Temporary chats are not used to train Google’s AI models; feedback on other chats can have separate handling. Check the current notice before assuming that invisible history means immediate erasure.
Keep the practical boundary simple: enter only information you are allowed to send to the service. A privacy control can reduce a specific use of your information without making the service an appropriate destination for every confidential document.
Keep the approved answer, not the whole chat
Create a project in fenbs and record the decisions a person approved, with their reason and scope. Leave private examples and raw conversation content out of the shared record. Connected assistants can read those work rules before starting another session.

How to do this with fenbs?
- Create a free account, free for one person with no credit card, and add the project you want to continue.
- Write the approved outcome in Decisions and rules. Include who decided and what work it applies to; omit private conversation details.
- Add a short context note and the next task. State what remains uncertain instead of copying the entire exchange.
- Use the Integrations guides to connect a supported assistant. For Google’s supported connection, follow the Gemini CLI guide; the consumer Gemini chat screen is not that connection.
- Ask the assistant to read the project context before working and save progress before stopping. Review the saved summary for unnecessary sensitive information.
fenbs does not change Gemini privacy settings, erase Google activity, or import your chats. If you only need a one-time personal question with no continuing work record, Gemini’s own temporary-chat controls may be enough.
How can you check that the setup matches your goal?
Use a harmless example, such as an imaginary meeting agenda. Confirm the account, temporary indicator, activity choice, and public-link list. Check each control directly; an assistant saying it will forget is not a substitute for reviewing the relevant setting.
