How to Make ChatGPT Delete Your Data
Remove the right records: chats, remembered information, files, and the account itself have separate controls. Use a clear checklist without assuming deletion is immediate.

To make ChatGPT delete your data, use the deletion controls for the records you want removed, rather than only asking in a conversation. Deleting chats, removing remembered information, deleting saved files, and deleting your account are different actions. Start by identifying the copies involved so you do not mistake a cleaner sidebar for complete removal.
If you intentionally saved work in fenbs, review that separate record too. Removing a ChatGPT conversation does not remove a decision or project note you copied into another service. Keep the review focused on the information you want removed, without creating fresh copies of it in a cleanup task.
Which deletion steps should you take first?
- Confirm the account and workspace containing the information. Separate a personal account from an employer-managed workspace before changing anything.
- Identify the affected chats and delete them through their conversation menus. Review archived chats as well as the regular sidebar.
- Review Personalization and Memory settings for separately remembered information. Remove the relevant memory and its remaining sources.
- Check saved files, project material, and copies you deliberately sent elsewhere. Remove each copy through the service that holds it, when you are authorized to do so.
- If your goal is to close the entire account, read the account-deletion confirmation and use the account controls or verified privacy-request route.
For company work, check with the person responsible for retention before deleting business records. A cleanup request should identify the scope and who can authorize it. For example, removing an accidental upload of a client spreadsheet is a different job from closing an employee account during an approved departure.
Write a short inventory using categories, such as conversation, saved file, and project note. You usually do not need to reproduce the sensitive text to track its removal. Give each category an owner and record whether the action was requested, completed in the interface, or still awaiting confirmation.
How do you remove chats instead of hiding them?
Open the conversation menu, choose Delete, and confirm. OpenAI also documents bulk controls under Settings and Data controls; read the confirmation carefully because bulk deletion can affect project conversations. Archiving leaves the conversation stored. Follow the official chat deletion instructions (opens in a new tab) for the current interface.
Search and review archived conversations before concluding that an older record is gone. A conversation can disappear from the regular sidebar because it was archived or because you switched workspaces. Neither event proves deletion. Check the location that actually held the record and avoid deleting unrelated work just to simplify the review.
A useful completion note says which category was removed, from which workspace, and when you submitted the action. It should not say that all provider copies have vanished. Our AI governance library covers the broader rules for keeping work records manageable.
What if ChatGPT still remembers the information?
Saved memories can exist separately from their original conversations. Open Settings, Personalization, and the Memory controls available to your account. Remove the remembered information and check its sources, which can include chats, saved files, instructions, or connected content. OpenAI explains these distinctions in Memory in ChatGPT (opens in a new tab).
Asking ChatGPT to forget something can help manage a saved memory, but a conversational reassurance is not a receipt for deleting every source. Review the settings yourself. The separate guide to clearing ChatGPT memory covers memory cleanup in more detail.
Treat a later answer that mentions the same subject as a reason to investigate, rather than proof of one particular cause. The current conversation might still contain the information, or another saved source might remain. Test from a new conversation after making the changes, without pasting the information back into the test.
Which files and outside copies need a separate review?
Where Library is available, a saved file can remain after its chat is deleted. Review Library and any relevant project files separately. OpenAI describes the different storage locations in its chat and file retention guidance (opens in a new tab). Disconnecting an outside app also requires a separate review of material already copied into conversations.
List deliberate downloads, shared documents, screenshots, and copied summaries within the scope of your request. Deleting the original conversation cannot recall a file you downloaded to a computer or a copy another person saved. Ask the responsible owner about those records instead of assuming one delete button reaches across services.
For example, say you summarized a meeting in ChatGPT and then saved the agreed next step in fenbs. Decide whether the problem concerns the raw meeting text, the approved next step, or both. A human can record the authorized handling rule in Decisions and rules without retaining the material being removed.
Keep the cleanup rule without copying the sensitive data
Create a project for the work and record the handling decision a person approved. Add a task describing which categories need review and who should check them. Save only permitted context; fenbs does not delete data from ChatGPT or verify provider erasure.

When should you delete the whole account?
Use account deletion when you intend to close the account, not just remove a particular conversation. For an eligible personal account, open Settings, Account, and Delete account, then follow verification. If you cannot sign in, use the verified Privacy Portal route in OpenAI’s account deletion guide (opens in a new tab). Managed accounts should go through their organization.
Account deletion is permanent and can affect access to other OpenAI services. Check the confirmation and any subscription consequences before continuing. If your objective is only to remove a mistaken upload, scope the deletion to that information instead of closing an account that still contains authorized work you need.
Removal from your account view and removal from provider systems are different stages. OpenAI documents a deletion period and exceptions, including legal or security requirements. Use the linked policy for the current terms and keep the request confirmation; do not promise immediate erasure or assume that deleting content reverses earlier model training.
How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account if you need a shared work record for an authorized cleanup. One person can start free, with no credit card.
- Add the project and a task describing the affected record categories, the responsible person, and the remaining checks. Leave the underlying sensitive content out.
- Record the human-approved retention or removal instruction in Decisions and rules. Keep an unresolved approval open rather than letting an assistant decide it.
- Review any project context intentionally saved in fenbs as its own data-handling matter. Save permitted progress and the next step, distinguishing a submitted request from confirmed completion.
fenbs is useful when the team needs continuity about the work. It is not the right fit for erasing a provider’s records or storing evidence that your policy forbids copying. For managed-account responsibilities, see ChatGPT for business; changing providers, discussed in ChatGPT alternatives, also leaves existing records to review.
