How to Change ChatGPT Memory and Correct Outdated Details
Correct remembered details at their source, check the result in a fresh conversation, and keep approved project facts separate from personal preferences.

To change ChatGPT memory, open Settings, then Personalization, then Memory, and review the controls your account provides. Correct the outdated information in the memory summary or saved-memory controls when available, then check a fresh response. For work facts that need an approved home, fenbs keeps project decisions outside a personal memory system.
A useful correction identifies the old fact, its replacement, and where the replacement applies. Saying that a former client is now a current client is different from asking for a more formal tone in one email. Fix the smallest inaccurate assumption rather than rewriting everything you have told the assistant.
What steps change a remembered detail?
- Write down the incorrect detail and one example of the answer it affected. Keep the example short enough to compare after the change.
- Open Settings → Personalization → Memory. Review the summary or individual saved memories your account displays.
- Use the available correction control, or tell ChatGPT exactly what is outdated and what should replace it. Include the relevant project or situation.
- Review the visible change, start a new ordinary conversation, and ask a question that depends on the corrected fact.
OpenAI describes the available correction paths in its Memory documentation (opens in a new tab). Control names and availability vary, and a memory summary is a high-level view rather than a complete inventory. If your screen differs, follow the options actually shown instead of assuming a missing button means the information is gone.
Where did the outdated information come from?
Look for the first place the old fact appeared. It might be a previous message you supplied, a file still attached to the project, or an instruction you wrote deliberately. If Sources appears below an answer, inspect the references it shows, while remembering that it may not explain every influence on the response.
Separate a stored error from a reasonable response to the current prompt. If you paste last quarter’s proposal into today’s conversation, the assistant may repeat its old deadline because you just supplied it. Label the document as historical and provide the approved deadline before changing account-wide preferences.
For an example, imagine a studio that moved a launch from May to June. Search the working materials for both dates. The important correction is “June is the approved launch month for the Harbor project,” rather than “Always replace May with June.” The second instruction could damage unrelated work.
How specific should the replacement be?
Use a short statement with an explicit boundary: “For the Harbor website project, the approved audience is existing customers. The earlier prospect audience is outdated.” Add the person or document that approved the change when that matters. Avoid adding several unrelated preferences to the same correction.
Distinguish a fact from an instruction. “The launch month is June” describes the work. “Ask me before changing the launch month” says how to behave. Both can be useful, but merging them into a vague sentence makes later review harder. Someone should be able to verify each part separately.
Project instructions and files also deserve review; our ChatGPT project memory guide explains that layer. Keep the approved replacement in fenbs Decisions and rules when other assistants need the same answer, with the person who made the decision and its scope.
How can you tell whether the correction worked?
Use a fresh ordinary chat for the main check. Ask a practical question such as “Which audience should the Harbor homepage address?” Compare the answer with the approved correction. A response that says it understands your change is weaker evidence than a later response that applies the correct fact.
For a separate comparison without personalization, start a temporary chat and choose Unpersonalized before sending anything. A personalized temporary chat can still use existing memories and custom instructions. OpenAI’s Temporary Chat guide (opens in a new tab) explains the choice; neither temporary option writes new memories while it remains temporary.
Run the comparison with neutral wording. Do not include the old audience in one test and omit it from the other. Record what you asked, which setting you used, and the result. This distinguishes an improvement you can observe from an impression that the assistant seems different.
Which facts should live outside personal memory?
Keep exact approvals, changing schedules, unresolved questions, and current task status in a maintained work record. Personal preferences can make everyday answers more comfortable, but a project needs a way to explain why an answer is current and who approved it. A remembered sentence alone does not provide that workflow.
This matters when you use more than one AI app. Our Claude and ChatGPT comparison covers choosing between those assistants; whichever you choose, the approved project answer should stay available independently. Ask the next assistant to read the project record before it suggests a change.
Give the corrected project fact an approved home
Record the replacement fact in fenbs with the person who approved it and the project it applies to. Connected assistants can read Decisions and rules before continuing, while the old reasoning remains reviewable. Start with the one outdated assumption that caused the mistake.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account, then add the project affected by the outdated fact.
- Record the approved correction in Decisions and rules. Name the person who chose it, include the reason, and distinguish a project choice from an ongoing rule.
- Connect your supported assistant through Integrations. Ask it to read the project context before drafting or changing work.
- Save progress before stopping, including which outdated materials still need review and the next check. Review History when you need to see who changed the record.
fenbs does not edit ChatGPT memory or import your conversations. It is unnecessary if you only need to correct a personal preference inside ChatGPT. It fits when the corrected information describes work that several sessions, people, or AI apps must continue using.
What if the old fact still appears?
Check the current prompt and project materials again before issuing the same correction repeatedly. OpenAI notes that memory updates can take time to propagate. If the behavior persists, keep the exact wrong answer and the visible controls as evidence rather than assuming every repetition has the same cause.
