How to Edit Obsidian Notes With AI

Use AI to proofread, reorganize, and format an Obsidian note while keeping its meaning and links intact. Start with one copy and review every change.

To edit Obsidian notes with AI, give an assistant a copy of one note or selected passage, request a specific editing pass, and review the result before replacing the original. You can start by copying text into an approved AI app; installing a plugin is optional.

Keep the note in Obsidian and the reusable editing instructions somewhere easy to retrieve. Tools like fenbs can hold those prompts and the project context, so changing assistants does not mean explaining your house style again.

How do you make the first edit safely?

  1. Choose one short note. Make a separate copy before editing, and check that you can still open the original.
  2. Select only the passage the assistant needs. Remove confidential details before sending text to a service your organization has not approved for that material.
  3. State one job: correct grammar, improve the outline, shorten repetition, or standardize formatting. Ask for suggested changes before a full rewrite.
  4. Compare the proposed version with the original. Accept useful edits individually, then read the saved note in Obsidian.

Obsidian notes are Markdown, plain text with formatting symbols, stored in a local folder called a vault. Its data-storage documentation (opens in a new tab) explains that other text editors can edit those files and Obsidian refreshes to reflect external changes. That makes an outside editing workflow possible, but a working copy still gives you a clear recovery point.

For example, take a rough project note with headings for questions, evidence, and next steps. Ask for clearer sentences within those headings first. Reorganizing the whole note at the same time makes it harder to tell whether a missing sentence was deliberate or an accidental omission.

What should the editing prompt say?

Specify the audience, the editing goal, and what must survive unchanged. A grammar correction should not become an argument rewrite. If the text contains an uncertain conclusion, tell the assistant to preserve that uncertainty instead of making the prose sound more confident.

A reusable editing request
Edit the passage below for clear US English.
Keep my meaning, uncertainty, and first-person voice.
Do not add facts, citations, dates, or examples.
Preserve Markdown links, tags, properties, code, and quotations exactly.
First list proposed changes with short reasons.
Then provide an edited copy. Flag unclear claims as questions.

PASSAGE:
[paste the selected text]

Read the proposed changes before using the revised copy. If the assistant wants to replace “may reduce review time” with “reduces review time,” reject that change unless your evidence supports it. Smooth wording is useful only when the original claim remains accurate.

Once a prompt works, give it a name and record its purpose. A proofreading prompt and a restructuring prompt should be separate, because they permit different changes. The AI brain guide explains why a small reusable work record can be more useful than another long conversation.

How do you protect Markdown and Obsidian links?

Ask the assistant to treat formatting syntax as protected text, then verify it yourself. Your note can look readable while a changed internal link points somewhere else. Small edits to a tag, an attachment path, or a heading referenced by another note can matter more than the paragraph around them.

  • Compare internal links and embeds character by character, including anything inside double brackets.
  • Check the properties at the top of the file. Keep field names and values unless changing them was part of the request.
  • Preserve quoted text and source references. Explain an awkward quotation outside the quotation rather than silently correcting it.
  • Check lists, tables, indentation, and code blocks in the saved note rather than relying on the assistant’s preview.

Obsidian offers Source mode for inspecting the underlying syntax and Reading view for inspecting the result. Its editing-mode guide (opens in a new tab) describes both. Use them together: one catches altered markup, while the other shows whether headings, lists, and links read properly.

Can AI proofread without rewriting your voice?

Begin with corrections that have a clear reason: a typo, a missing word, an ambiguous reference, or an inconsistent term. Ask for optional style suggestions separately. You can then improve readability without accepting a polished voice that no longer sounds like your notes.

For a journal entry, preserving your phrasing may matter most. For a technical note, preserving a precise distinction may matter more. Tell the assistant which applies, and request a question whenever improving the sentence would require guessing what you meant.

Review factual edits against the source, not against another AI response. Keep a short record of recurring mistakes, such as changing “proposed” to “approved.” In fenbs, reusable prompts can carry that instruction into later sessions through the workflow described in How it works.

How fenbs helps

Keep the editing instructions that actually worked

Save a proofreading prompt and a separate formatting prompt in Skills and prompts. Add project rules about protected terminology and quotations, then ask your connected assistant to read them before editing. Obsidian remains the home of your notes; fenbs holds the reusable instructions and work context.

Should you use a plugin or an outside editor?

Copying a selected passage into an assistant is a useful starting point because you can see what you send and what you paste back. If repeated editing makes that cumbersome, evaluate a plugin or file-editing assistant using the same review process. Test on a disposable copy before granting access to a working vault.

Obsidian’s plugin-security guidance (opens in a new tab) says community plugins inherit broad application access, including access to files and the internet. Read the plugin’s own data-handling information and settings. The separate Obsidian AI plugin guide covers choosing that route; this workflow is about reviewing the edit itself.

If you use a coding editor to make file changes, our Cursor introduction explains that type of assistant. Keep its scope to the intended note and check the file differences. A request to tidy one paragraph should not become a vault-wide cleanup.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account, then add a project for the writing or research your notes support.
  2. Save your tested editing request in Skills and prompts. Include the exact protections that mattered during review.
  3. Record the style choices a person approved in Decisions and rules. Add tasks for factual questions that still need checking.
  4. Connect a supported assistant through Integrations, ask it to read the project context, and save progress after the reviewed edit.

fenbs does not edit or sync your Obsidian vault. It is useful when the same project, prompts, and decisions need to survive several AI sessions; a single occasional proofreading request may need only your note and a working copy.

What should you check before replacing the original?

Read the original and revised version side by side. Check that every key claim, source, qualification, and next action is still present. Open the relevant links, then confirm the final file has the intended name and location.

Save a short explanation of what changed when the note supports shared work. If a note feeds a changelog, the guide to AI release notes from tasks covers that separate output. Find more workflows in the AI at work library. An edit is finished when both the meaning and the saved file pass review.

Questions people ask.

Do I need an Obsidian AI formatter to fix a note?

No. You can copy a passage into an approved assistant, request Markdown formatting, and paste back the reviewed result. A plugin may make repeated work more convenient, but it still needs review.

Can I give an assistant my entire vault?

Some workflows allow broad file access, but start with only the note or passage needed. Review the tool’s permissions and data handling before exposing private material or allowing changes to several files.

Will AI preserve my citations automatically?

Do not assume it will. Tell it to preserve citations and quotations exactly, then compare them with the original and open the sources yourself.

What is the best first editing task?

Choose a short, non-sensitive note and ask for grammar suggestions only. That gives you a clear way to compare the result before trying larger structural changes.
