Does ChatGPT Work in the Background?
ChatGPT Work tasks can run while you do other things, but ordinary chats do not continue after you close the tab, and the mobile app suspends like any other app. Here is what background processing actually means for each ChatGPT surface.

It depends on which part of ChatGPT you mean. ChatGPT Work tasks (the agentic feature released July 2026) run on OpenAI's servers and continue while you do other things, including closing the browser tab. Ordinary conversations do not: the model responds once, then waits. The mobile app follows standard phone behavior and pauses when the app is in the background.
Whether a task ran while you were away is only half the question. You also need to know what it did and what comes next. A tool like fenbs keeps the task status and Where we left off in one record so the picture is clear when you return.
ChatGPT Work tasks: what runs and what does not
ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's name for agentic tasks where ChatGPT browses the web, fills forms, and takes multi-step actions on your behalf. A Work task runs on OpenAI's servers. Once you confirm the plan and the task starts, it continues whether your browser is open or not.
When the task finishes, ChatGPT notifies you inside the interface the next time you open it, or through the notification mechanism your device supports. Check OpenAI's current help pages for which plans include Work tasks and what notification options are available.
Ordinary conversations: no background processing
A standard ChatGPT conversation processes one message at a time. The model generates a response and then waits for your next input. Nothing continues in the background: if you close the tab or navigate away before the response finishes generating, the response may be lost.
For a long task within an ordinary conversation, you need to stay in the tab. If the task could take many minutes and you need to do other things, a Work task is the right approach.
iPhone and Android: how the mobile app behaves
On iPhone and Android, the ChatGPT app behaves like any other app. When you switch to another app or lock your screen, iOS and Android suspend background activity to preserve battery. The chat does not continue processing after the app leaves the foreground.
If you start a response in the app, switch away, and return later, the response will be in the conversation if it finished before the app was suspended. If it did not finish, it may be incomplete or may not have been saved.
There is no setting in the ChatGPT mobile app that keeps it running in the background against iOS or Android operating system rules. Asking ChatGPT to "keep running in the background on iPhone" is asking for something the operating system does not permit for standard apps.
iPhone and Android also limit background audio, network activity, and processing for most apps unless the app has been granted a specific entitlement for its category. A general-purpose AI chat app does not have a background-processing entitlement. If you are looking for a way to keep ChatGPT running while you use other apps on your phone, there is no setting that achieves this.
What you can do while a Work task runs
While a Work task is active, you can close the browser tab, use other applications, or step away from your computer. The task runs on OpenAI's servers. Return to the ChatGPT interface to check its progress or review the result.
You can interrupt a Work task from the interface if it is still in progress. If it has already completed an action you did not intend, you will need to reverse that action manually.
Keeping a useful record of what happened
A Work task that ran while you were away leaves a record in the ChatGPT interface. That record lives in one chat. If you need the result, the next step, or any decision the task reached to be accessible across sessions or to a different assistant, save it outside the chat.
In fenbs, Where we left off records what a task completed and what it did not, so the next session, whether it uses ChatGPT or a different assistant, starts from an accurate picture.
The record also matters when the person reviewing the result is not the same person who started the task. A Work task you launched before lunch may be reviewed by a colleague in the afternoon. If the result lives only in your ChatGPT interface, they cannot see it without you. A shared record removes that dependency and makes the output immediately available to whoever picks up the work next.
Keep the task status where the next session can find it
After a background Work task finishes, record what it completed and the next step in fenbs. Where we left off gives any connected assistant the current state. If you switch from ChatGPT to Claude or another tool, the shared record bridges the gap.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and add the task you want to hand off to ChatGPT.
- Write the task scope in the note: the starting point, the goal, and where ChatGPT should stop.
- Connect ChatGPT over MCP from Integrations and ask it to read the project context before starting.
- When the Work task completes, review the result and record what was done and the next step in fenbs.
- If the next session uses a different assistant, it reads the same record and picks up from Where we left off.
