Custom GPT Chat History: Find and Preserve Useful Work

Your custom GPT conversations belong to your ChatGPT history, separate from the assistant itself. Find the original chats, understand what sharing changes, and keep reviewed decisions useful when you switch assistants.

Custom GPT chat history lives with your conversations in ChatGPT, in the account and workspace where you had them. Sharing the GPT gives someone access to the configured assistant; it does not give them your personal transcript. Tools like fenbs keep a reviewed record of the work outside that chat, so a useful decision can survive a change of assistant.

Keep three things separate: the assistant you chose, the conversation you had, and the work you accepted. A transcript can contain all your experiments. The next person usually needs the agreed result, its source, and the unfinished step. Preserving those takes more than bookmarking the GPT.

For the assistant itself, see the custom GPT overview.

Where can you find your custom GPT conversations?

Start in the ChatGPT account and workspace you used for the conversation. Open sidebar Search and try a distinctive phrase from the messages, a project name, or a document title. OpenAI’s chat search guide (opens in a new tab) explains that search can match chat titles and messages. An older chat missing from the sidebar has not necessarily been deleted.

  1. Confirm the account and workspace before searching. A work conversation may be in a different workspace from your personal chats.
  2. Search for words you actually used. Try the name of the deliverable or a memorable phrase rather than only the GPT’s name.
  3. Check Archived chats in Settings under Data controls. Archived conversations remain searchable even when absent from the normal history list.
  4. Open the matching conversation and read the surrounding messages. A search result may find an abandoned draft rather than the final answer.

If you used a locked chat, check the Locked chats area separately; it does not appear in regular search. Deleted conversations cannot be recovered through search. When the content is important, confirm that you can open the actual conversation before relying on a saved title or link.

Does the GPT remember what you said last time?

A saved transcript and an assistant remembering it are different things. OpenAI’s GPTs documentation (opens in a new tab) says GPTs do not use saved memory, custom instructions, or previous conversations. A new conversation starts fresh. Finding yesterday’s chat does not mean a new chat with the same GPT has read it.

Say you used a proposal GPT to explore three approaches, then chose one with your colleague. In a new conversation, provide the chosen approach and its reason. Avoid saying only “continue the proposal,” which leaves the assistant to guess which proposal and which version you mean.

The comparison of ChatGPT Projects and custom GPTs covers their different purposes. For this problem, the practical question is whether the next conversation receives the specific work you approved. fenbs provides a place to save that work with its project, including Decisions and rules and Where we left off; see how it works.

Does sharing a GPT share your chat history?

Sharing the assistant and sharing a conversation are separate actions. OpenAI says GPT builders cannot view individual conversations people have with their GPTs. Giving a colleague the GPT link does not show them the exchange in which you developed your proposal.

A conversation link is different. OpenAI’s sharing guide (opens in a new tab) explains that personal-account conversation links can be viewed by anyone with the link, while managed-workspace links are restricted to eligible members of that workspace. Review the full preview before sharing, including any supported files or images it contains.

Share the smallest useful record. Your teammate may need the approved paragraph and its supporting source, without the exploratory messages that preceded it. Check your organization’s rules before moving work into another service, and keep confidential material out of a link whose audience you cannot control.

What happens to history when you migrate or replace the GPT?

First identify what is moving. Replacing the configured assistant, merging a workspace, and copying the results into another tool are different operations. Do not assume one operation preserves all three: the assistant, its conversations, and your continued access to them.

If your workspace offers GPT-to-plugin migration, OpenAI’s migration guide (opens in a new tab) warns that previous chats may not copy. It recommends saving useful prompts and identifying needed context. Keep important results separately and test the replacement with that context before making it the normal place to continue work.

A personal-to-organization workspace merge has different consequences. OpenAI’s workspace migration guidance (opens in a new tab) says supported cloud conversations transfer, but access afterward follows the destination organization’s policies. Save important material first and verify it after the move. Losing membership can also mean losing access to migrated content.

For eligible accounts, follow OpenAI’s data export instructions (opens in a new tab), then open the downloaded archive and check the conversations you need. Organization-managed export options differ, so ask the workspace owner when self-service export is unavailable. A backup transcript helps preserve evidence; a reviewed handoff explains what to do next.

What should you preserve from a useful conversation?

Keep the original conversation when you need the full trail, and write a short work record for continuation. Check each statement against the chat and its sources before treating it as accepted. An assistant’s confident summary can still turn an option into an agreement or make an unchecked draft sound finished.

A useful record to carry beyond the conversation
SaveInclude
Accepted resultThe exact version a person approved, with the person and reason when relevant.
EvidenceSource documents, useful references, and what was actually checked.
Open workThe remaining task, its current plan, and anything waiting on a person.
Starting pointThe next concrete action and any assumption that still needs confirmation.

For the proposal example, “use the shorter introduction; audience confirmed; figures still need review” is actionable. “We worked on the proposal” is not. The same preservation principle applies when moving to another app, as discussed in Claude Projects vs custom GPTs.

How fenbs helps

Keep a record of who changed the work

Save the reviewed result in the relevant fenbs project and tasks, with the decisions people made and the next step. History records changes and who made them, person or assistant. Your next connected assistant can read that work record without needing access to the original GPT conversation.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account, free for one person with no credit card, and add the project whose work you want to preserve.
  2. Review the useful conversation yourself. Add current tasks and record the decisions a person actually made in Decisions and rules, keeping unresolved questions open.
  3. Save Where we left off with what was completed, what was checked, what remains, and where the next session should begin.
  4. Connect a supported assistant using the integration guides. Ask it to read the project context and describe the next step before continuing.

fenbs does not import ChatGPT chats or read your chat history. If your only goal is to keep a complete transcript, a checked export or your approved archive is a better fit. Use fenbs when you need a maintained work record and an AI handoff between sessions or assistants.

How can you tell whether the handoff is complete?

Start a fresh conversation with the replacement assistant and ask what was approved, what remains unverified, and what it should do next. Compare its answer with your saved record before letting it continue. Correct missing context at its source so the following session receives the same correction.

Keep the original transcript available for questions the summary cannot answer. The goal is a clear route from the past conversation to the current work. Our AI memory guides explain other ways stored information can help a later session.

Questions people ask.

Can the creator read everything I tell their custom GPT?

OpenAI says GPT builders cannot view individual conversations with their GPTs. A GPT that connects to an outside service may send relevant input to that service, so review its connections before sharing sensitive information.

Is archiving a conversation the same as deleting it?

No. Archived conversations remain searchable and are available through Data controls. Deleted conversations cannot be recovered through chat search.

Will copying the final answer preserve the whole project?

It preserves that answer, but may omit why it was chosen, what was checked, and what remains unfinished. Save those details alongside the approved result so another person or assistant can continue accurately.

Can fenbs recover a deleted GPT conversation?

No. fenbs does not import or recover ChatGPT conversations. It keeps the work you choose to record, including tasks, decisions, progress, and the history of changes to that record.
