Copilot Notebooks: Can You Change the Model?

Copilot Notebooks offers model choice through an early access experience, so the answer depends on the controls available to your account. Here is what to check, what other settings do, and how to continue elsewhere without losing your research.

Yes, if model choice is available in your Copilot Notebooks experience: Microsoft documents deeper thinking and specific GPT model selection as a Frontier feature, meaning early access. That does not mean every notebook account has the control; check Microsoft’s Notebooks announcement (opens in a new tab) against your screen before following an older guide that says switching is impossible.

If the model you need is unavailable, you can continue in another approved AI app after preparing its sources and instructions. fenbs can keep the research brief, checked findings and next steps outside that app, so changing assistants does not mean rebuilding the explanation.

How do you check and change the notebook model?

  1. Open the Microsoft Copilot app with the account that owns or can access your notebook. Select Notebooks in the left navigation, or find it through the app launcher, then open the notebook you want to use.
  2. Look for a model-choice control in the notebook conversation itself. A selector visible in a separate Copilot chat is not evidence that your notebook has the same choices.
  3. If the control is present, choose the offered thinking option or named model that fits your task. Use the options actually displayed, rather than a model name copied from a tutorial.
  4. Submit a small question with an answer you can check against a reference. Record the selected option, question and source set if you plan to compare results.
  5. If the control is absent, check your access and the feature’s availability before changing anything else. Do not delete the notebook or rebuild its references just to search for a selector.

Microsoft’s getting-started instructions (opens in a new tab) explain where to find Notebooks and warn that features can roll out gradually. Treat these steps as a way to inspect your available experience, not a promise that every account will show an identical menu.

Why is the model picker missing from your notebook?

Access to a notebook and access to a preview feature are different questions. Microsoft’s Frontier program guide (opens in a new tab) explains that work access depends on organizational participation and eligible access. Ask your administrator whether notebook model choice is available to your account, rather than asking them to enable a model in an unrelated product.

Check that you are signed into the intended organization and using its supported experience. Include those details and a screenshot of the missing control in a support request. A clear report helps distinguish an account issue from a feature that has not reached you.

Instructions for GitHub Copilot models concern the coding assistant; Copilot Studio model controls concern building agents, so neither is a notebook setting.

Which settings change the answer without choosing a model?

A model is the AI system producing a response. Instructions, source scope and research tools affect the job it performs, but they are different controls. Keep those differences clear when testing whether a change improved your answer.

Separate model choice from the other notebook controls
ControlWhat it changesWhat to check
Model choiceThe offered model or thinking option used for a prompt.Whether the notebook exposes the control and your required option.
Custom instructionsGuidelines for tone, format and the topic to emphasize.Whether your directions clearly describe the output you need.
Source scopeThe material the task is allowed to draw on.Whether the answer should stay within notebook references or use broader sources.
ResearcherA research workflow that can involve external sources.Whether additional research is appropriate for this question.

Microsoft documents custom instructions (opens in a new tab) for response style and focus. Writing “use a different model” there should not be treated as proof of a model switch; use an explicit product control when you need to verify selection.

Microsoft’s Researcher instructions (opens in a new tab) describe selecting Researcher in the compose box and reviewing its sources. That is a research workflow, not evidence that a particular model became your notebook default; the broader distinction is covered in Copilot Notebooks vs agents.

Will another model fix a weak answer?

First identify what failed. If the notebook lacks the approved document, another model still needs that document. If the question mixes two conflicting versions, resolve which version applies before judging the response.

For a fair comparison, keep the question, references, instructions and source scope the same. Check factual support, missing qualifications and whether the answer separates evidence from suggestions. A longer or more confident answer is not automatically a better one.

A small research check before changing models
Using the approved proposal and meeting notes, list the agreed deliverables.
For each deliverable, name the supporting source and section.
Separate confirmed commitments from suggestions.
If the sources disagree or omit an answer, say so.

Open the cited material yourself before marking a finding as checked. Keep the correction with the project so the next comparison starts from an accurate record. In fenbs, you can preserve that checked context for a supported connected assistant.

When should you continue in a different AI app?

Consider another app when the required model is unavailable in your notebook, your organization approves the alternative, and you can provide the needed material there. If the available notebook controls already produce a useful, verifiable result, staying put avoids extra setup.

Choose the destination by the work you need to finish, not its name alone. The broader Copilot vs ChatGPT comparison covers the app-level choice. Before moving client or company material, check that the destination is approved for that material and that the next assistant can access the actual sources.

Changing apps is a handoff. A source link in a summary does not give another app permission to open it, and a summary cannot replace a document needed for close review. Test access with one necessary source before moving the rest of the work.

What should you take into the next session?

Prepare a short research brief that another person could check without reading the whole conversation. For example, a design studio comparing proposal options should carry the approved scope and unresolved questions, rather than every draft answer.

  • Goal: the question the research must answer and the output you need.
  • Sources: document names, versions and locations, plus any access requirements.
  • Checked findings: what you verified, where the evidence is and what remains uncertain.
  • Human decisions: the approved scope and instructions that continue to apply.
  • Next step: one specific action, including any approval needed before proceeding.
How fenbs helps

Keep the checked research when you change assistants

Save your research brief and verified findings as project context in fenbs, then record the next step in Where we left off. A supported connected assistant can read that record before continuing in another AI app. Keep the source documents accessible separately so it can check the evidence.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account, free for one person with no credit card. Add a project for the research you want to continue.
  2. Manually save the research brief and checked findings as AI context notes. Add a task for the unanswered question, keeping its problem separate from the plan for investigating it.
  3. Record choices a person has approved in Decisions and rules. Keep a proposed recommendation distinct from an actual decision.
  4. Follow the integration guide for your supported app to connect through MCP, a standard way for an AI app to use an outside tool, with browser sign-in. Ask it to read the project context and Where we left off before continuing.
  5. Provide the necessary source material through an approved method, review the next answer, and save progress before stopping. Include what was checked and what the next session still needs to do.

fenbs does not connect directly to Copilot Notebooks or automatically import its contents. It is not the right fit if you only need an in-notebook model selector; it helps when the research needs to continue across supported assistants. The switching models hub covers that wider workflow.

Questions people ask.

Can a prompt force Copilot Notebooks to use Claude?

A written request is not a verified model selection. Use an explicitly offered model control; if your required model is absent, do not assume an instruction has enabled it.

Does adding a Copilot chat preserve the model that answered it?

Do not assume that adding a conversation as a reference also transfers its model settings. Check the controls in the notebook conversation where you are sending the new prompt.

Should I ask Copilot which model it is using?

Treat its response as insufficient evidence by itself. Prefer the visible product selection and Microsoft’s documentation when you need to verify a model choice.

Do I need to move my entire notebook into fenbs?

No. Manually save the project goal, checked findings, approved decisions and next step. Keep the original documents where they belong and provide the next assistant with appropriate access separately.
