Claude Desktop Not Opening? Checks Before You Reinstall
Most Claude Desktop startup failures clear with a few simple checks. Work through them in order before uninstalling, and keep your project context available in another client while you fix the issue.

Claude Desktop not opening usually comes down to one of a short list of causes: the app is already running in the background, it needs an update, something in the cached data has become corrupted, or a restart will clear whatever is blocking the launch. Tools like fenbs keep your project context and current tasks outside the desktop app, so you can continue in Claude's web interface (opens in a new tab) or another client while you work through the fix.
Work through these checks in order. Most startup problems clear with the first two or three steps.
Check if Claude Desktop is already running
Claude Desktop may be open but invisible. On Mac, look for the app icon in the Dock or the menu bar. Right-click and choose Quit, then try opening it again. On Windows, check the system tray in the lower-right corner of the taskbar. If the icon is there, right-click and exit before relaunching.
If the app appears in your process list but the window will not show, force-quit it through Activity Monitor on Mac (search "Claude") or Task Manager on Windows (look for Claude in the Processes tab), then reopen from your Applications folder or Start menu.
Restart your computer and update the app
A full restart clears temporary files and resets any blocked system resources the app may have been waiting on. After restarting, check that you have the latest version of Claude Desktop. Anthropic releases updates that fix startup and compatibility issues, so an outdated installation is a common cause of launch failures.
Download the current version from claude.ai/download (opens in a new tab). Install over the existing app rather than deleting it first. If the app opens after the update, you are done.
Clear Claude Desktop app data
Corrupted cached data can stop the app from launching. Clearing it does not affect your account or conversation history stored on Anthropic's servers, but it will require you to sign in again.
- On Mac: open Finder, press Command+Shift+G, paste ~/Library/Application Support/Claude, and move the folder to the Trash. Reopen Claude Desktop.
- On Windows: open the Run dialog (Win+R), type %APPDATA%\Claude, press Enter, and delete the contents of that folder. Reopen Claude Desktop.
- If deleting the full folder feels risky, try moving it to your Desktop first. You can put it back if the problem persists.
Check system requirements and permissions
Claude Desktop requires macOS or Windows. Check Anthropic's system requirements (opens in a new tab) for the current minimum versions. If your operating system is below the minimum, the app may fail to launch without any clear error message.
On Mac, also check that Claude Desktop has the permissions it needs. Open System Settings, go to Privacy and Security, and look for any blocked permissions related to Claude. Granting accessibility or network access can sometimes resolve a launch failure.
Security software can also prevent Claude Desktop from launching. Some antivirus or endpoint protection tools quarantine newly installed applications automatically, especially after an update. Check your security software's quarantine list or activity log to see whether Claude Desktop was blocked. Adding it to the allowed list and restarting before trying to open it again will confirm whether security software was the cause. This is particularly common on managed corporate devices where security policies update automatically.
Keep your project context accessible when the desktop app fails
fenbs keeps your project rules, current tasks, and Where we left off outside the desktop app. If Claude Desktop will not start, open claude.ai (opens in a new tab) in a browser, connect it to fenbs over MCP, and ask it to read your project context. Your work is still there, with no manual re-explaining required.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and add your active project, including current tasks and any rules your assistant follows.
- Connect Claude over MCP from Integrations — this sets up both the desktop app and the web interface with the same connection.
- When the desktop app fails to open, go to claude.ai in a browser and ask Claude to read your fenbs project context before continuing.
- Continue your session in the browser. Before you close it, ask Claude to save progress on any tasks it touched.
- Return to Claude Desktop once the issue is fixed. Your work record will already be up to date.
When to reinstall Claude Desktop
If clearing the app data and reinstalling over the top have not worked, do a clean reinstall. On Mac, drag Claude from your Applications folder to the Trash, empty it, then download and install a fresh copy. On Windows, uninstall through Add or remove programs, then install again.
A clean reinstall resets the app to a known state. Your account and conversation history on Anthropic's servers are not affected by uninstalling the local app. You will need to sign in again after reinstalling.
If none of these steps work
Check Anthropic's status page (opens in a new tab) to see if there is a known issue with Claude services. If the app worked recently and nothing changed on your system, a temporary service problem could be the cause.
For issues that persist after a clean reinstall, contact Anthropic support through claude.ai. Report the operating system version, the Claude Desktop version you were running, and the exact point at which the launch fails. The MCP configuration guide and Claude Desktop overview may also help if the app opens but specific features are not working.
