Does ChatGPT Temporary Chat Have the Same Memory Context?
Temporary Chat can use existing personalization when you choose it, but it does not create new memories while temporary. Separate that setting from the messages you provide in the conversation.

ChatGPT Temporary Chat does not always have the same memory context as a regular chat: it depends on whether you choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before starting. A personalized temporary chat can use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins; an unpersonalized one does not use those sources.
Both choices can still work with what you write in the current conversation. Neither creates or updates memories while the chat remains temporary. For a project discussion, tools like fenbs keep a work record you can review and selectively copy into a session, without assuming that ChatGPT has remembered the project.
Which kinds of context should you separate?
Context means the information available to help produce an answer. Some comes from your current messages; other information may come from account personalization. Those are different routes into a response, so seeing an apparently familiar detail does not establish which route supplied it.
| Source | What it contributes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Current conversation | The messages and material you supply during this session. | Did you already mention the detail, perhaps inside an example? |
| Existing personalization | Relevant remembered information, instructions, or plugins when personalization is selected. | Which choice did you make before the first message? |
| New saved memory | Information retained as memory for another conversation. | Temporary conversations do not create or update it while temporary. |
| General model knowledge | Broad knowledge and patterns learned before your conversation. | A plausible guess about your work is not proof of personal recall. |
OpenAI explains these choices in its Temporary Chat documentation (opens in a new tab). For the broader distinction between information used now and information carried between sessions, see memory versus context.
Does Temporary Chat use custom instructions?
It can. Choose Personalized and existing custom instructions may help shape the response. Choose Unpersonalized and they are excluded along with memory and plugins. You cannot change that personalization choice after the conversation starts, so start another temporary conversation if you chose the wrong option.
Custom instructions are guidance you deliberately give about how ChatGPT should respond. They differ from a sentence you enter during this chat. If you choose Unpersonalized and then type “answer in short paragraphs,” you have still provided a local instruction. Following it does not mean your account instructions leaked into the conversation.
Use this distinction when trying a different writing style. Start unpersonalized, provide the desired style in your first message, and avoid including an older sample that contains conflicting directions. Keep the task narrow enough that you can judge whether the response followed the instructions you actually supplied.
Why can a temporary conversation seem to remember you?
First check whether it was personalized. Then inspect the current messages. A business name might appear in a pasted email signature, a course level in a worksheet, or a preference in your question. ChatGPT can use those details without drawing on an earlier conversation.
An answer can also fit you by coincidence. If you ask about preparing client presentations, advice about clear slides does not prove that the assistant remembers your occupation. Test for a harmless, specific detail rather than treating a familiar tone as evidence of stored memory.
OpenAI also distinguishes limited safety-related use of context from ordinary personalization. Unpersonalized should therefore not be treated as a promise that every possible use of earlier information is technically impossible. For account controls and their scope, use the official memory guide (opens in a new tab).
How can you check what carried into this session?
- Choose a harmless test detail. Avoid names, account information, private work, or anything you would not want in the conversation.
- Start a new temporary chat and inspect the personalization choice before sending a message. Record which option you selected.
- Ask a question that would reveal the test detail if it were available, without supplying that detail in the question.
- Provide the detail explicitly and ask a follow-up. This checks whether the current conversation can use newly supplied context.
- Compare the answers cautiously. One correct guess or one missed fact is not a complete audit of how the product handled context.
For example, use a fictional project code in a normal test conversation, then try a fresh temporary conversation. Keep the task and wording consistent. If the result surprises you, review your settings and the actual source messages before drawing a conclusion about memory.
A ChatGPT Project has its own context behavior; do not assume a temporary chat inherits its files or instructions. The guide to ChatGPT project memory covers that separate boundary. Our AI memory collection explains other ways information can persist.
What project information should you bring in deliberately?
Bring the smallest accurate summary that supports this task: the goal, relevant decisions, current state, and the question you want answered. Leave unrelated history out. A temporary conversation can be useful for a second opinion because you can choose exactly which explanation to provide.
- Goal: review the clarity of a product signup page.
- Decision: the owner approved keeping the form to essential fields.
- Current state: the draft is complete; mobile wording still needs review.
- Request: identify confusing phrases and explain each proposed change.
Label proposals separately from approved decisions. Otherwise, an assistant may treat an idea from a previous session as a settled requirement. In fenbs, the project context keeps Decisions and rules alongside progress, giving you a reviewed source for the summary you choose to paste.
Bring the work you selected into the conversation
Keep the project goal, approved rules, and current progress in fenbs, then copy only what this temporary conversation needs. You choose what crosses into ChatGPT and what useful result goes back into the project. fenbs does not read or import your ChatGPT history.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account, then add the project whose context you want to manage. One person can start free, with no credit card.
- Record the approved decisions in Decisions and rules. Add a short AI context note for the facts that support the current task.
- Review Where we left off and the relevant tasks. Copy a concise, non-sensitive summary into your temporary conversation yourself.
- After reviewing the answer, save only the useful work back in fenbs. Keep suggestions open until a person decides, and update the next step when it changes.
This workflow does not depend on an outside connection being available in Temporary Chat. fenbs is unnecessary for a disposable question with no continuing project; a short message can supply all the context you need. Its value appears when several sessions need the same current work record.
What changes if you decide to keep the conversation?
Saving a temporary conversation converts it into a regular chat. Its future handling follows your account personalization and model-improvement settings. Before saving, decide whether you want the conversation to become part of that ongoing account record rather than assuming temporary behavior will continue.
For one useful result, saving the whole conversation may be unnecessary. You can instead review a summary and put the approved project outcome in its proper place. Temporary Chat controls the conversation; a maintained project record controls what you intentionally carry into the next piece of work.
