ChatGPT Projects are available on the iOS and Android apps. You can open an existing project, start a new project chat and read the uploaded files your project contains, all from your phone. The experience is similar to the web version, though some actions are easier on a larger screen.
What a project on mobile cannot do is hand context to a different assistant or update a teammate's view of the work. Tools like fenbs keep the agreed next steps and decisions outside any one device or app, so the work is ready whether you continue on your phone or switch to another tool.
Finding your projects on the ChatGPT app
Open the ChatGPT app and look for the sidebar or the menu icon at the top left of the screen. Projects appear in the navigation alongside your recent chats. Tap a project name to open it and see the conversations inside.
If you created projects on the web, they sync automatically to the app. You do not need to recreate them. The files you uploaded and the custom instructions you set on the web are already there. Any chat you start in the app is added to the project's chat history, visible on the web and in the app.
If you cannot find the projects section in the app, check whether the app needs an update. Projects are available in recent versions on both iOS and Android; an older version may show your conversations but not the Projects navigation. Updating the app from the App Store or Google Play usually resolves this.
Starting a project chat on mobile
From inside a project, tap the compose or new chat button to open a conversation that uses the project's files and instructions. The assistant reads your custom instructions from the start, so you do not need to paste in the context manually.
You can also upload files to a project from your phone. The options depend on what your device allows: photos from your camera roll, documents from Files on iOS or a file manager on Android, or content you share from another app. For current file type and size limits, check OpenAI's help center (opens in a new tab).
Continuing work started on desktop
All your project chats are available in the app. Open the project, find the conversation you were working on and scroll to where you left off. The assistant can continue from there without you providing a summary of the previous session, because the full conversation history is present.
The limit here is that a new chat in the same project does not automatically know where the previous chat ended. Each conversation is independent. If you switch to a new chat for a new session, the assistant starts fresh with the project files and instructions but without the previous thread's context.
Keep the next step ready between devices
fenbs saves where each task stands and what comes next outside any device or app. When you finish a mobile session, ask your connected assistant to save progress in fenbs. When you continue on desktop or hand the work to someone else, the agreed next step is already there. fenbs does not sync your ChatGPT project files.

Mobile-specific tips
Typing long prompts on a phone keyboard is slow. Use voice input for drafting and questions, then switch to text for specific instructions or corrections. The ChatGPT app supports voice input on both iOS and Android.
When reading long responses on a small screen, ask the assistant to format its answer with short paragraphs or a numbered list rather than a single block of text. This is especially useful for step-by-step instructions or comparisons.
If you are composing a complex prompt on mobile, draft it in your notes app first, then paste it into ChatGPT. This gives you time to refine the wording without the chat interface timing out or losing your draft. Some actions, such as editing custom instructions, managing project files and reviewing project settings, are easier on the web. Make those changes on a desktop and continue on your phone.

When mobile is not the right fit
Uploading many files, reviewing a long document side by side with the assistant's output, or setting up a project's custom instructions for the first time are all easier on a larger screen. Use mobile for continuing work and capturing quick notes or ideas, and use the web for setup and complex editing tasks. A voice note recorded on your phone is often faster than typing a detailed prompt; record it, then paste the transcript into a desktop chat when you are ready to do the detailed work.
How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account. fenbs has a phone app on iOS and Android as well as the web app.
- Set up a project in fenbs and add the current tasks with their status.
- Connect ChatGPT over MCP from Integrations. At the start of each session, ask the assistant to read your context so it knows what is in progress.
- Before ending a mobile session, ask the assistant to save progress in fenbs: what was completed and what the next step is.
- When you return on desktop or in a new chat, the assistant reads the updated context from fenbs and continues from the recorded next step.
