ChatGPT Project Unable to Upload a File: What to Check
Most ChatGPT Projects upload failures have a simple cause. Work through file format, size, quota and browser checks before concluding the problem is a platform bug.
Updated 5 min read
When a ChatGPT project file upload fails, the error message is often vague: "unable to upload" or a generic failure notification. Most failures trace back to one of four causes: an unsupported file type, a file that exceeds the size limit, a rolling upload quota you have reached, or a browser or app problem that prevents the transfer. Checking them in order finds the fix faster than retrying the upload repeatedly.
While you troubleshoot, the source links and work context you need to continue are more useful stored outside the project. Tools like fenbs keep links to documents and the current work record so the session can continue even when an upload is blocked.
Check the file type
ChatGPT Projects support a specific set of file formats. A file in an unsupported format may appear to begin uploading before failing, without a clear message about the format being the problem. The list of supported formats is in OpenAI's help center (opens in a new tab). Check the list before trying other fixes.
Common conversions that resolve format issues: a Pages or Keynote file needs to be exported as PDF or Word before uploading; a Numbers spreadsheet should be saved as XLSX; an audio file likely needs to be transcribed rather than uploaded directly. If the content you need is in a format that is not supported, convert first.
Check the file size
Each file has a maximum size limit set by OpenAI. A PDF that is mostly scanned images can be many times larger than one with the same content as text. If a file exceeds the limit, the upload will fail regardless of the file type or the project's available space.
To fix a size issue: compress the PDF using a tool like Adobe Acrobat or an online PDF compressor, extract only the pages you need rather than uploading the full document, or convert images to text using an OCR tool before uploading. Reducing a 50-page report to the 5 pages the assistant actually needs is usually faster than compressing the whole document.
Check your upload quota
Separate from individual file size, there is a rolling limit on total uploads across all projects in a period. If you have uploaded several large files recently, you may have reached this quota even if the current file is within the size limit and the project has space.
Check the storage or quota indicator in your ChatGPT settings if one is visible. If you have hit the rolling quota, the fix is to wait for the period to reset or to remove files from projects you no longer need before uploading the new one. The upload limits article explains how the different limits interact.
Store source links, not the files
When a document lives in Google Drive, Dropbox or any other accessible location, the assistant does not need the file uploaded to reference it. fenbs keeps Links and listings with context: the document name, what it contains and why it is relevant. Any connected assistant reads those links from the fenbs context without using a project file slot. For documents you must upload, this reduces what takes up quota.

Browser and app issues
A browser extension, a network problem or a stale session can block an upload even when the file itself is fine. Try these steps if the file type, size and quota checks do not reveal the problem.
- Reload the page and try the upload again. Session issues often clear on a fresh load.
- Try a different browser. Chrome, Firefox and Safari behave differently with file uploads; a failure in one does not always mean a failure in another.
- Disable browser extensions, particularly ad blockers and privacy tools, which sometimes interfere with file transfer requests.
- Check your network. A slow or unstable connection can cause large uploads to time out silently.
- On mobile, close and reopen the app rather than just navigating back.
When the limit is a plan restriction
ChatGPT Projects are not available on the free plan. If you are on a plan that does not include Projects, the upload option may not appear or may fail consistently regardless of the file. Check your current plan against OpenAI's plan page (opens in a new tab) to confirm you have access to Projects.
If you are not sure which plan you are on, click your profile or account icon in the ChatGPT interface. The plan name appears there. If you need Projects and are on the free plan, you will need to upgrade before uploads to a project are possible. For individual file uploads outside Projects, the free plan has its own separate limits; check OpenAI's help center for current details.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and add a project in fenbs for your work.
- Add source links to the documents you need in the fenbs Links and listings rather than uploading copies to each project.
- Record the current tasks and context as structured notes in fenbs so the assistant can continue working even when a file upload is blocked.
- Connect your AI assistant from Integrations and ask it to read the fenbs links and context before starting a session.
- When an upload eventually succeeds, remove any duplicate information from fenbs to keep the record clean.
