ChatGPT for Research: Sources, Synthesis, and Verification
Use ChatGPT to organize a research question, compare evidence, and draft a checked summary. Keep source discovery separate from the conclusions you have actually verified.

Use ChatGPT for research by giving it a specific question, asking it to work from identifiable sources, and checking the evidence behind each important conclusion. Treat its summary as a draft for review, with a clear distinction between what a source says and what you infer from it.
The useful output is an answer you can explain and revisit, not just a fluent report. fenbs can preserve source references, checked findings, and the project’s next question across sessions. Keep the original evidence accessible in its own location so another assistant can inspect it again.
How do you turn a broad topic into a research task?
- Write the decision or question in one sentence. State who needs the answer and what they will do with it.
- Set boundaries: geography, time period, relevant population, and what the investigation excludes.
- Define what counts as evidence. Name the primary sources, original studies, or approved internal records you want used.
- Ask for a research plan and unanswered questions before requesting a final report.
Suppose a design studio wants to choose an accessibility testing process for a client website. “Research accessibility” is too broad. “Compare the evidence we need to review keyboard navigation on this website before launch” gives the assistant a usable purpose and makes missing evidence easier to spot.
OpenAI’s research synthesis example (opens in a new tab) describes organizing supplied papers and research materials around themes, disagreements, limitations, and claims needing review. You can use that structure for a small work investigation without treating the result as an exhaustive literature review.
Which sources should you ask ChatGPT to use?
Start close to the claim. For a product capability, inspect the vendor’s documentation. For a study result, read the original paper and its methods. For a company announcement, use the company’s own statement while recognizing that it represents the company’s position. A primary source can be relevant without being impartial.
Ask the assistant to identify the source’s author, publication date, scope, and the exact passage or table supporting the claim. A link alone does not tell you whether the page supports the sentence beside it. Keep an inaccessible document marked as inaccessible rather than accepting a guessed summary.
OpenAI’s web search documentation (opens in a new tab) explains that ChatGPT can show search results and citations when it uses web search. Check the current instructions for the surface you use; the presence of citations does not complete your source review.
The separate ChatGPT search guide covers source discovery, and Perplexity versus ChatGPT covers that tool choice. Here, the question is what to do with evidence after you find it.
How do you build an evidence record you can audit?
Use one row per claim rather than one row per interesting link. That makes unsupported conclusions visible. A useful record includes the proposed claim, supporting source, relevant passage, limitations, and review status. Keep the original wording of a finding separate from your plain-English explanation.
| Claim or question | Evidence to retain | Review state |
|---|---|---|
| The proposed method checks keyboard behavior | Method documentation and the specific checks it describes | Read and scope checked |
| The method catches every accessibility problem | Evidence of coverage and limitations | Unsupported; do not use |
| The team can repeat the check before each release | An agreed procedure and a completed trial | Waiting on team review |
Do not silently upgrade a tentative finding when shortening the report. “Participants in one study preferred this layout” and “users prefer this layout” make different claims. Preserve sample details and meaningful uncertainty, even when the executive summary needs to be short.
Keep the source references and outstanding checks in fenbs project context, so the next assistant can distinguish a lead from a verified conclusion.
How should ChatGPT synthesize conflicting findings?
Ask for the strongest supported answer and the strongest evidence against it. Have the assistant compare methods, populations, definitions, and dates before treating two findings as a disagreement. Different questions can produce different results without either source being wrong.
Using only the sources in this evidence record, answer our research question. Separate direct findings, interpretations, and unanswered questions. Give a source and passage for each important factual claim. Explain disagreements without averaging incompatible numbers. If the evidence cannot answer the question, say what is missing.
Review the final answer against the evidence record, sentence by sentence where the claim matters. OpenAI’s guidance on using ChatGPT (opens in a new tab) recommends checking important facts, source material, and unsupported assumptions before using the result. A second summary of the same material is useful for finding questions, but it is not independent confirmation.
The work prompts guide helps you make those instructions repeatable, while using AI at work puts human review into the wider process. Ask a qualified specialist to review high-stakes conclusions in their field.
Keep the evidence trail with the next question
Add source references to fenbs Links and listings and keep checked conclusions in the project’s context notes. Create tasks for missing evidence and record the current research position in Where we left off. The next connected assistant can read that record before collecting more sources or revising the answer.

How to do this with fenbs?
- Create a free account and add the research project with its question and scope.
- Add the important source references to Links and listings. Describe what each source supports and whether you have checked it.
- Create tasks for unresolved claims. Record agreed evidence standards as Decisions and rules, with the person who chose them.
- Connect a supported assistant, ask it to read the project context, and save checked findings and the next step in Where we left off before stopping.
fenbs is not the right fit for replacing a specialist reference manager or storing an entire research library. Use it for the work around the evidence: what you are investigating, which claims passed review, and what someone still needs to check.
What should a finished research handoff include?
Save the question, the current answer, the strongest supporting sources, the limitations, and the next useful check. Record when a change in scope would require revisiting the conclusion. A clear “we have not established this” protects the next session from building on a convenient assumption.
When the evidence is ready for a report, the ChatGPT writing workflow covers drafting and revision. The AI at work hub collects related workflows. Your research is ready to hand over when another person can trace the important claims without trusting the chat on its own.
