ChatGPT for Google Slides: Build a Deck From a Clear Brief

ChatGPT drafts outlines, slide text and speaker notes, but cannot open Google Slides itself. Here is how to move from a brief to a finished deck without losing your sources or decisions.

Updated 5 min read

ChatGPT can write your slide outline, draft the text for each slide, and suggest speaker notes, but it cannot open or edit Google Slides directly. You provide your audience notes, ChatGPT drafts the content, and you paste or import it into the deck. Knowing that boundary keeps the workflow smooth and the final slide content accurate.

The slide content lives in your presentation, but the audience brief, approved structure and source links are easy to lose between sessions. Tools like fenbs keep that record outside any one chat, so a revision session or a different AI app starts from the same notes.

What ChatGPT can and cannot do with Google Slides

ChatGPT can produce a numbered outline, write concise slide titles and bullet points, draft speaker notes for each slide, suggest a slide count for a given time slot, and rewrite text for a specific audience or tone. It can also check whether a narrative arc holds together or spot a section that is doing too many jobs at once.

It cannot open a Slides file, insert content into a presentation automatically, or access the web unless you are using a version with browsing enabled. For adjacent Google Workspace tasks, ChatGPT for Google Sheets and ChatGPT for Google Docs cover those flows.

Google Workspace also ships its own AI features through Gemini for Workspace, which can generate slides from a prompt inside the Slides editor on supported plans. That is a separate product. Check Google's help pages (opens in a new tab) for what is available on your plan.

Write a brief that produces a useful outline

A vague prompt produces a generic deck. Before asking ChatGPT for anything, write down four things: the audience, the goal, the time limit, and the two or three points the deck must land. A slide deck is an argument, not a report. Give ChatGPT enough context to serve the argument.

  • Audience: who they are, what they already know, and what they need to decide or do afterward.
  • Goal: one sentence on what success looks like (the client approves the budget, the board understands the risk).
  • Length: the number of minutes available, which sets a rough slide count.
  • Must-cover points: the two or three facts or arguments the deck cannot omit.

Paste your notes directly into the prompt. If you have a company template or a required style, describe it or paste a representative example slide. A richer context produces a tighter outline with fewer revision rounds.

Ask for an outline before asking for slide text

Ask ChatGPT to produce a numbered outline with one sentence per slide describing its single point. Review that outline before you ask for the full text. Changing a structure costs one prompt; rewriting twelve slides costs twelve.

When the structure is right, ask for the slide text in a format you can use. A table with columns for the slide title, three bullet points and a speaker note is easy to copy into Slides. You can also ask for a plain numbered list that follows the same order as the outline.

A useful rule of thumb: one to two slides per minute of speaking time. A ten-minute presentation fits eight to twelve slides comfortably. Tell ChatGPT the time limit and ask it to flag if the outline is running over.

How fenbs helps

Keep your brief and decisions where any AI can find them

Save the audience brief, approved outline, source links and structural decisions as tasks and notes in fenbs. A second session or a different AI app reads the same project context instead of asking you to re-explain the audience or the approved structure.

Move content into Google Slides

Google Slides has no direct paste-from-ChatGPT feature. Your practical options are: copy the text and paste it slide by slide; import a Microsoft PowerPoint file you built from the ChatGPT output; or use a third-party add-on that reads a structured document and creates slides from it.

If you copy manually, format the ChatGPT output as a table or numbered list first so the slide order is obvious. Pasting unstructured text into Slides usually lands everything on one slide and takes longer to fix than a clean copy.

Keep visual design separate from the content work. Slide content is text; layout, color and imagery are a second pass. Trying to describe visual design in a ChatGPT prompt at the same time as the structure usually produces neither well.

Review facts and sources before presenting

ChatGPT can produce plausible-sounding statistics, dates and citations that are invented or wrong. Every factual claim in a presentation needs a source you can show the audience. Before you finalize the deck, read it once and mark anything that came only from ChatGPT. Open the primary source for each claim and verify it directly.

Save the verified sources alongside the deck. If a stakeholder asks where a number came from during the meeting, you want the link in fewer than ten seconds. Keep those source links with the project notes rather than in a browser tab that closes when the session ends.

For a comparison of AI versus search for gathering evidence, ChatGPT vs. Google for research covers when each approach is stronger.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account. Add a project for the presentation with the goal and audience as the project description.
  2. Add a task for the deck. Paste your audience notes into the plan field and add links to the sources you plan to draw on.
  3. Connect ChatGPT over MCP from Integrations. Ask it to read the project context before drafting the outline.
  4. As you agree on structure, record decisions in Decisions and rules (for example, "the deck ends with a single ask, not a summary slide").
  5. Before you finish, ask the assistant to save progress: what is complete, what still needs fact-checking, and the source links it used.

Keep your notes for the next revision

A deck often needs a revision after the first stakeholder review. Keep your audience notes and decisions in the project so you can return without reconstructing the context. When the goal or time limit changes, update the task plan and ask ChatGPT to revise the outline from those updated notes. The revision round becomes a prompt, not a new project.

Questions people ask.

Can ChatGPT create a Google Slides file directly?

Not directly. ChatGPT drafts the content — outline, slide text, speaker notes — but cannot open or edit a Google Slides file. You copy the output into Slides or use a third-party tool to import it.

How many slides should I ask ChatGPT to write?

A useful starting point is one to two slides per minute of speaking time. Give ChatGPT the time limit and ask it to suggest a slide count based on your brief. Review and trim the outline before asking for the full slide text.

How do I check whether ChatGPT's facts are accurate?

Mark any factual claim that came only from ChatGPT and find the original primary source for each one. Never present a statistic, date or citation you found only in a ChatGPT response without verifying it against the original source.

Can I use Gemini inside Google Slides instead?

Yes. Gemini for Workspace includes slide-generation features inside the Slides editor on supported plans. Check Google's own help pages for availability on your account. The choice between ChatGPT and Gemini here depends on which account and plan you already have.

How do I reuse a presentation brief for a future deck?

Save your audience notes, structural decisions and source links outside the chat in a project note or document you control. A tool like fenbs keeps those notes with the project tasks so any connected assistant can read them in a future session without you re-explaining the context.
