ChatGPT Desktop Connectors: Setup and What Is Available
ChatGPT has desktop apps for Mac and Windows, but not every connector available on the web is available on desktop, and setup steps can differ. Here is how to check what your desktop app supports and how to keep project context available across devices.

ChatGPT has desktop applications for Mac and Windows, and most connected apps and data sources you authorize on the web are linked to your account, not to a specific device. In practice, though, some features appear on the web before they arrive on desktop, and desktop-specific capabilities like reading files from your local machine work differently from web-based connectors. Tools like fenbs keep the project context available across devices through MCP, so the work record travels with you regardless of which client you use.
Checking current desktop feature parity is worth doing before assuming what works in your browser also works in the app.
How connectors relate to your account, not a device
Most ChatGPT connectors, meaning the integrations you authorize with a browser sign-in, are stored at the account level. When you connect a file storage service or a project tool, that connection follows your account. Opening ChatGPT on another device and signing in gives you the same connected services.
The exception is local capabilities. The desktop app on a Mac can access files on your Mac's local filesystem, which the web app cannot do. That local file access is tied to the specific machine and its app installation, not to an account-level connector.
What to check for desktop connector availability
OpenAI releases features progressively. A connector or integration available on the web may not yet appear in the desktop app, or may appear in a different location. Before spending time troubleshooting an absent feature, check two things.
- Is the feature listed in OpenAI's current desktop app release notes? Check OpenAI's help center (opens in a new tab) for the current desktop feature list.
- Is your desktop app up to date? Desktop apps do not always auto-update. Open the app's menu and check for updates before assuming a feature is missing permanently.
- Is the feature on your plan? Some connectors are available only on paid or enterprise plans, on both web and desktop.
- Does your account have the connection already authorized? Log in to the web app and check settings if the desktop app does not show a connector you expect.
Setting up connectors on Mac
On a Mac, ChatGPT desktop may prompt for additional system permissions, such as access to the Documents folder or the clipboard, depending on the features you enable. These permissions are managed through macOS System Settings, not within ChatGPT itself. If a feature that needs local access does not work, check System Settings and look for ChatGPT in the Privacy and Security section.
For account-level connectors, the setup steps in the desktop app mirror the web app. Find the connector in settings, click to add it, and authorize through a browser sign-in. The ChatGPT connectors not working guide covers troubleshooting steps if a connection fails to activate.
Setting up connectors on Windows
On Windows, ChatGPT desktop has similar capabilities to the Mac app, with Windows-specific permission prompts for features that access local files or clipboard data. Grant permissions through Windows Security or the app's own settings when prompted.
If you are on a work-managed Windows device, IT policies may restrict what the app can access. Check with your IT team if certain features are unavailable. For organization-level connector management, see the enterprise admin documentation on OpenAI's help center.
Keeping project context available across devices
A practical gap with any desktop app is that conversations and context can feel tied to a device. If you start a project on the Mac and continue on a Windows machine or a phone, the conversations themselves may not carry over the way you expect.
Keeping project context in fenbs rather than in conversations solves this. The fenbs MCP connection follows your account and works in ChatGPT on any device. The same project tasks, Decisions and rules, and Where we left off are readable from any session.
Keep project context available across devices and sessions
fenbs connects to ChatGPT through MCP on any device where you sign in. Set it up once in your account and the project context, tasks and Decisions and rules are available in every ChatGPT session, whether you're on a Mac, Windows PC or phone. Use Integrations to connect.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and add the projects you want available across devices.
- Connect fenbs to ChatGPT through MCP using Integrations. The connection is set at the account level and works in both the web and desktop app.
- On a new device, sign in to ChatGPT and verify the fenbs connection appears in settings. If it does not, add it again from the Integrations guide.
- At the start of each session, ask the assistant to read the project context before you start work.
- Before switching devices, ask the assistant to save progress so the next session on any device starts from the current state.
Signing out or switching accounts on desktop
If you use the desktop app with more than one account, check which account is active before starting a conversation that relies on connected tools. Connectors are authorized to a specific account, so switching accounts changes which connections are available. This is especially relevant on a shared computer where multiple people use the same ChatGPT desktop installation.
When desktop connectors may not match what you need
If a specific integration is only available on the web app, the simplest solution is to use the web app for that task. The ChatGPT web interface and the desktop app share account data, so you can switch between them mid-project. fenbs does not connect directly to the ChatGPT desktop app in any special way; it connects to your ChatGPT account, which the desktop app uses.
