ChatGPT Connector for Confluence: Setup and Access
ChatGPT can search and read from Confluence through available connection routes. This guide explains the options, the source permissions you need to check, and how to verify the connection is reading from the right spaces.

Connecting ChatGPT to Confluence lets the assistant search and read from your team's wiki and documentation as context for its answers. The setup requires the right Confluence permissions and, depending on the route you choose, an Atlassian account with the appropriate access. Getting the permissions right before connecting saves troubleshooting time later.
Once the connection is working, the more useful step is deciding what to extract from Confluence into an active work record. Decisions buried in a wiki page are hard for an AI to act on reliably. A tool like fenbs holds the decisions and tasks extracted from your documentation in a form that connected assistants can read at the start of every session.
Available routes to connect Confluence and ChatGPT
There are several ways to connect ChatGPT to Confluence, and the right one depends on your Atlassian setup and your ChatGPT plan.
- ChatGPT Enterprise connectors: ChatGPT Enterprise includes connectors for enterprise knowledge sources. Check your admin console and OpenAI's Enterprise documentation for whether a Confluence connector is currently available and how to configure it.
- Atlassian Rovo: Rovo is Atlassian's own AI tool that searches across Confluence, Jira, and other Atlassian products. Rovo is a separate product from a ChatGPT connector; if your search for a "Rovo connector" is about connecting ChatGPT to Confluence, Rovo serves a different purpose.
- Custom integration via the Atlassian API: developers can build a custom integration using the Confluence REST API and a workflow automation tool or a ChatGPT Action. This gives precise control over which spaces and pages are accessible.
- File export: export a Confluence space or specific pages as PDF or text and share them with ChatGPT directly. This is the simplest route but is a static snapshot rather than a live connection.
Check OpenAI's connector documentation at help.openai.com (opens in a new tab) for the current set of supported connectors and which ChatGPT plans include enterprise knowledge source access. Requirements change frequently.
What Confluence permissions you need to check
Confluence has its own permission model at the site, space, and page levels. A connection that uses your Atlassian account can only read spaces and pages that your account has permission to view. If ChatGPT is returning no results from Confluence, the connected account may not have access to the spaces you expect.
For enterprise Confluence setups, your Atlassian admin may also control which third-party apps can access the API. Check with them whether API access is enabled for the Confluence instance you want to connect, and whether your account is in a group that permits third-party integrations.
- Your Atlassian account must have view permission on the Confluence spaces you want ChatGPT to search.
- Page restrictions override space permissions; a restricted page is not accessible even if the space is open.
- Enterprise and Data Center Confluence instances may have additional API authentication requirements beyond standard OAuth.
Verify the connection is reading from the right spaces
After setting up the connection, test it before relying on it for real work. Ask ChatGPT to summarize a page or answer a question you know the answer to from a specific Confluence space. If it returns the right content, the connection is working as expected. If it returns nothing or the wrong content, check the account permissions and whether the space is included in the connector's scope.
Keep an eye on what ChatGPT actually reads versus what you intended to connect. A connector with broad Confluence access can surface content from spaces that were not meant to be part of the context for a particular project.
Atlassian Rovo is not a ChatGPT connector
Rovo is Atlassian's own AI assistant, built to search across Confluence, Jira, and other Atlassian products. It is not a connector that adds ChatGPT to Confluence or connects Confluence to ChatGPT. If you are looking for Atlassian's own AI search, Rovo is the product to check. If you want ChatGPT to search your Confluence content, look at the connector and API routes described above.
Extract decisions and tasks from your documentation
Confluence is excellent for reference documentation: process descriptions, how-to guides, meeting notes, and project history. It is less suited to tracking the current state of active work: which decision is in force right now, which task is in progress, and what the next step is.
For active work, extract the key decisions and tasks from Confluence into a dedicated work record. This keeps the wiki as a reference library and gives connected AI assistants a clean, current starting point without having to search through pages of documentation to find what matters for today.
Keep decisions and tasks from your documentation in one active record
When a Confluence page contains a decision or a next step, record it in fenbs as a Decisions and rules entry or a task. Connected assistants read the active work record at the start of every session, so they start from the current state of the work, not from a search through documentation that may be months old.

How to do this with fenbs
- Create a free account and add a project that corresponds to your Confluence space or project.
- Review the key Confluence pages for standing decisions and current tasks. Add those to fenbs: decisions go into Decisions and rules, active work goes into tasks.
- Connect ChatGPT over MCP from Integrations. Ask it to read the project context before answering questions about the work.
- When a Confluence page is updated with a new decision or a change to the project direction, update the corresponding entry in fenbs so the active record stays current.
