ChatGPT Canvas Export: Save and Hand Off Your Work

Canvas does not have a one-click export button for every format, but there are reliable ways to save a document, share it, or move the work to the next person or session.

Updated 5 min read

ChatGPT Canvas keeps your document or code inside the chat session, which makes export a deliberate step rather than an automatic save. The options available depend on the content type and your plan. Tools like fenbs give you a place to record the deliverable link, the review status, and the next action so the handoff is clear even if the export format changes.

Here are the main ways to get your Canvas content out and into a format a teammate, client, or next session can use.

Copy the document text to your clipboard

The most direct path is to select all the text in the Canvas panel and copy it. You can then paste it into Google Docs, Word, Notion, or any other tool. This works for every Canvas document regardless of plan or content type.

When you paste, check the formatting. Headings, bold text, and lists may carry over if you paste into a rich-text editor, or they may appear as plain text. Paste into a new document and review before sharing it.

Use the download option where available

Canvas shows a download or export button in the toolbar for certain content types and plans. Look for an icon at the top of the Canvas panel. When it appears, it typically offers a plain text or Markdown download. PDF export is available in some configurations; check the dropdown to see what is offered for your current document.

If the download option does not appear, your plan or the current content type may not support it. Copying and pasting into a document tool, then exporting from there, is the reliable fallback for PDF.

Export a PDF through your document tool

The most consistent way to produce a PDF is to copy the Canvas content into Google Docs or Word, format it as needed, and then export to PDF from that tool. Both let you export a PDF in one step from the File menu.

This approach also gives you a chance to check the document before sending it. Read through the exported copy, check headings and spacing, and correct any formatting that did not survive the paste. Signing off on a document you have read is a safer handoff than forwarding a machine-generated file without review.

Copy code from a Canvas session

For code content, the copy button in the Canvas code block copies the entire snippet to your clipboard. You can paste it directly into your editor, a GitHub Gist, or a code file. If Canvas ran the code and produced output, copy the output separately; it is not included in the code copy.

Verify the exported result

After exporting, open the file in the tool it is intended for and read through it. Check that every section is present, that the formatting matches your intent, and that any links or references are still correct. A quick review before sending catches most issues.

If the document will go to a client or a stakeholder, also check that no placeholder text, incomplete sentences, or AI-generated qualifiers ("you may want to consider") remain. Canvas edits are a starting point, not a finished product. Check word count and heading structure as well; Canvas can occasionally generate duplicate headings or drop a section when editing a long document.

Sharing the exported document with a team

Canvas does not generate a shared link that works outside ChatGPT. To share the document with a teammate, export it first and then distribute it through your team's existing tool. If you use a shared Google Drive, Notion workspace, or Confluence, pasting the document there gives everyone access through the tool they already use without needing a ChatGPT account.

If the document will go through a review cycle, save a copy of each version before you revise it further. A Canvas session holds only the current state of the document. If a reviewer asks to go back to an earlier draft, you need that version stored somewhere outside the chat history. A dated file name in a shared folder keeps versions distinct without requiring a separate version-control tool.

How fenbs helps

Record the deliverable and next action in fenbs

After exporting, add the file link, its review status, and the next action to the relevant task in fenbs. A teammate or your next session can then see exactly what was produced, whether it has been reviewed, and what remains before the work is complete. This keeps the handoff clear even if the export format or the tool changes.

How to hand off Canvas work with fenbs

  1. Create a free account and add a project or task for the document you are working on.
  2. After exporting the Canvas document, paste the file link or storage location into the task as a link.
  3. Set the review status: for example, note whether the document has been sent for review, is approved, or still needs editing.
  4. Write the next action as a context note or in Where we left off: who needs to do what before the work is complete.
  5. Connect your AI to fenbs from Integrations so a future session can read the task status and pick up from the correct point.

Questions people ask.

Can I export ChatGPT Canvas as a PDF?

PDF export is available on some Canvas configurations via the toolbar download button. If it does not appear, copy the document into Google Docs or Word and export to PDF from there. That method works regardless of your ChatGPT plan.

How do I save a Canvas document before my session ends?

Select all the text in the Canvas panel and copy it, then paste it into a document tool or plain text file. Do this before closing the browser tab, because Canvas content is tied to the current conversation and may not be recoverable after the session ends.

Does Canvas auto-save my document?

Canvas content is stored in your ChatGPT conversation history, not saved as a separate file. You can return to the conversation later, but the safest approach is to export the content to an external tool after each significant editing session.

How do I share a Canvas document with a teammate who does not use ChatGPT?

Export the document to a format your teammate uses: copy it into Google Docs, export to PDF, or paste it into a shared Notion page. Canvas does not currently offer a live share link that works outside ChatGPT.
