Can Claude read EPUB? Prepare a usable book source
Claude accepts EPUB files directly. Upload a book, check what its text extraction preserved, and keep chapter references with the findings you want to use again.

Yes. Claude lists EPUB among its supported document upload types (opens in a new tab), so you can attach an EPUB directly without first converting it to PDF. Claude extracts text from non-PDF documents; that does not mean it reads embedded book illustrations or preserves a printed page layout. Keep the edition and chapter with anything you use. fenbs can keep your checked findings and next reading step so another AI can continue the work later.
How do you upload an EPUB to Claude?
- Open the Claude chat where you want to discuss the book.
- Select the + button, then Add files or photos.
- Choose your EPUB file and select Open. The upload guide also documents dragging the file into the chat.
- Ask Claude to identify the title, author, and chapter headings it can read before requesting a summary.
- Compare a short passage from the response with the same passage in your ebook reader before relying on the extraction.
The attachment steps come from the upload guide; the identification and passage check are a practical way to verify your source. A successful attachment alone does not tell you whether the text you need came through clearly. Start with one recognizable chapter rather than asking for a broad judgment about the whole book.
For broader drafting and review work after the book is attached, use the guide to Claude for documents. Here, the first job is making the EPUB a source you can check.
What parts of the book can Claude actually read?
Anthropic describes non-PDF documents as text extraction only. Treat an EPUB as a text source: do not assume Claude has interpreted a diagram, a photographed page, or an illustration embedded beside a paragraph. If an argument depends on a figure, inspect that figure yourself and make clear which parts of your question depend on it.
The guide also distinguishes chat attachments from files kept in a Claude project’s Files section for reference across conversations. Both have limits, and extracted content still has to fit within the available context, the amount of information the model can work with at once. Putting a book in Files does not remove that boundary.
Check the upload guide for current file and attachment limits before choosing where to place a large book. For a fuller explanation of the reading boundary, see Claude’s context window. Keep questions focused enough that you can verify the answer against an identified section.
How do you keep chapter references useful?
Give Claude the reference information you already know: the book title, author, edition, and chapter you are investigating. Ask for a chapter heading and a short identifying passage with each important finding. These are instructions for your reading workflow, rather than a promise that EPUB uploads produce formal page citations.
A useful request might be: “Explain the argument in the chapter called Materials. Identify the section supporting each point, distinguish the author’s claims from your interpretation, and say when you cannot locate supporting text.” Choose a chapter that exists in your own book; this is an example prompt, not a claim about an uploaded title.
- Keep the edition or version of the EPUB with the reading note.
- Preserve the chapter and section heading exactly as they appear in the source.
- Check quoted words directly in your ebook reader before using them.
- Label your interpretation separately from what the author explicitly says.
Save the checked conclusion and its location together. The shared work record in fenbs gives your next assistant the finding you accepted, rather than leaving it to guess which part of a long book discussion mattered.
Should you convert the EPUB to another format?
Start with the original EPUB because it is already supported. Converting every book before trying it adds another file whose contents you must compare. A format change is useful only if it solves a problem you have actually found, such as text you cannot locate reliably in the attached source.
The upload guide does not promise to decrypt DRM-protected books or preserve every chapter and page-layout detail. If your copy cannot be read, use a version you are authorized to access in a supported format. Do not treat conversion as proof that a protected file can be opened or that missing illustrations have become available to the model.
What should you check when an answer seems wrong?
Separate three questions: did the right file attach, did the relevant text come through, and did the answer interpret that text fairly? Begin by asking Claude to locate a distinctive sentence from the section you are reading. Compare the response with the book before asking it to repeat the analysis.
If the source is readable but the answer wanders, narrow the request to one chapter and one question. Ask it to identify unsupported conclusions rather than fill gaps. The workflow for research with Claude covers checking conclusions more broadly; an attached book still deserves the same source review.
Keep a short list of unresolved questions while you read. “The chapter’s cost example needs checking” is more useful than saving a confident summary that you already doubt. Record the failed check as well, so a later assistant does not repeat an assumption you have rejected.
Never lose the work you did in an AI session
After a useful AI session, save it in fenbs: the key observations, findings, research and context. Then carry on from exactly where you left off, on any device and in any other AI. The next AI you connect reads it at the start of the session, so you never have to explain the same problem again.

How to keep your checked book findings with fenbs
- Create a free account.
- Save the book title, edition, chapter, and the finding you checked. Include a source link when you have one you can use.
- Write what still needs checking and the next chapter or question to start with.
- Connect Claude to fenbs, then ask it to read the saved work before continuing.
- Before you stop, save what changed so you can carry on from exactly where you left off, on any device and in any other AI.
Claude documents custom remote connectors (opens in a new tab) for using outside tools; account and organization controls apply. fenbs keeps your reading work; it does not import your Claude chats, decrypt books, or read an EPUB for you. If you only want to read a book without keeping findings or handing work to another assistant, your ebook reader and the Claude conversation may be enough.
