Are ChatGPT Temporary Chats Used for Training?

No, while they remain temporary. Training, personalization, retention, and account identity are separate questions, and saving the chat changes which settings apply.

No. ChatGPT Temporary Chats are not used to improve OpenAI models while they remain temporary, including when you choose personalization. If you save one as a regular chat, your account’s model-improvement setting applies, according to OpenAI’s data-use explanation (opens in a new tab).

That answer does not mean the conversation is anonymous or instantly erased. Decide separately what the service may process and what work you want to keep. fenbs can hold a short project record you intentionally retain, without importing your temporary conversations or treating them as shared knowledge.

Which privacy questions does temporary mode answer?

Separate the questions before deciding what to type. “Do not train on this” describes one use of content. It does not answer who you are signed in as, whether an outside tool receives data, or whether an employer permits that information to leave its systems.

QuestionWhat to establish
TrainingWhether the conversation remains temporary or has been saved as a regular chat.
PersonalizationWhether existing account context is available for this conversation.
RetentionWhat copies may remain and which policy applies to them.
Identity and accessWhich account, workspace, and authorized services are involved.
Your own recordsWhether a result needs to be retained and where it is appropriate to keep it.

For example, an employee might ask for a clearer version of an internal announcement. Avoiding model training is relevant, but the employee still needs permission to submit the announcement. The right decision starts with the information and the organization’s rules, rather than a reassuring mode name.

Can a temporary conversation still use existing memories?

Yes, if you choose the personalized option. The official Temporary Chat guide (opens in a new tab) distinguishes Personalized, which can use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins, from Unpersonalized, which does not use those features. You choose before the conversation starts; neither option creates or updates memories while the chat remains temporary.

Do not equate personalization with training. An assistant can use saved context to tailor an answer without that conversation being used to improve its model. The distinction also works the other way: changing a memory preference is not a complete review of model-training settings.

If you want the assistant to consider only the context you deliberately provide for the job, inspect the initial choice and avoid unrelated attachments or connected services. Our guide to turning off ChatGPT memory owns the broader memory-settings question.

Does temporary mean anonymous or immediately deleted?

No. Temporary mode is a conversation setting, not a promise of anonymity. The same official guide says account and workspace restrictions still apply. Using it while signed in does not establish that your account identity has been removed from the service’s handling of the conversation.

OpenAI’s chat and file retention guidance (opens in a new tab) says a safety copy of a temporary chat may be kept for up to 30 days. If saved as a regular chat, it follows saved-chat retention rules. A conversation missing from the sidebar therefore does not prove immediate deletion.

Treat retention as a documented policy question, not something you can reliably test by asking the assistant whether it remembers. A model’s answer is not a view into account records, backups, or deletion systems. Check the vendor documentation and any managed-workspace policy that applies to you.

For highly restricted work, use the environment your organization has approved or ask the responsible person before uploading. A temporary mode is not a substitute for that decision. The AI and privacy guide covers choosing what information an assistant should receive in the first place.

What changes if you decide to save the chat?

Saving converts it into a regular conversation. OpenAI’s Data Controls documentation (opens in a new tab) says the saved conversation then follows the account’s personalization and model-improvement settings. Check those settings before saving rather than assuming the original temporary treatment continues.

For accounts where the control is available, Settings, then Data controls, contains Improve the model for everyone. Turning it off prevents new conversations from being used for training and does not delete saved chats. Keep that choice separate from whether you want a conversation in history.

The data-use page also explains a feedback exception for individual accounts: voluntarily providing response feedback can allow the associated conversation to be used for training after an opt-out. Do not treat every account control as an unconditional promise about every later action; read the relevant feedback terms before sending material.

For the mechanics of keeping a conversation, use the temporary-to-permanent chat guide. Here the important boundary is that a change from temporary to saved requires another privacy check.

What should you do before sharing work in this mode?

  1. Confirm the account and workspace. Use the one approved for this kind of work, and check organization rules before submitting information.
  2. Confirm the conversation is temporary and review the personalization choice before the first message.
  3. Remove information the task does not need. Use a fictional example when asking about structure, wording, or a general method.
  4. Review outside tools before using them. A service receiving information has its own data-handling terms.
  5. Choose deliberately whether any useful result should be saved, and recheck the applicable settings before converting the chat.

The Temporary Chat guide warns that data sent through a GPT action is governed by the recipient’s privacy policy, which may allow different retention and uses. A promise about the conversation itself should not be extended to another company receiving part of it.

Keep your approved sharing boundary somewhere the next assistant can read. With fenbs Decisions and rules, you can record “Use fictional examples for restricted client work” without storing the client material itself. People approve the rule; assistants can record it and apply it to later tasks.

How fenbs helps

Retain the approved work, deliberately

Add only the project facts and decisions you choose to keep in fenbs, rather than copying a whole temporary chat. Record the next task and where work stopped so another authorized assistant can continue. fenbs does not read your ChatGPT history or change ChatGPT’s training controls.

How to do this with fenbs

  1. Create a free account, free for one person with no credit card, and add a project with an approved description.
  2. Record the human-approved privacy rules in Decisions and rules, including excluded information and who resolves uncertain sharing requests.
  3. Manually add only the reusable project result you want retained, with the remaining work as a task. Leave private or temporary discussion out.
  4. Save Where we left off with the next check and any question waiting on a person. Ask the next connected assistant to read AI context before continuing.

fenbs is not the right fit for a conversation you want kept nowhere, and it does not verify another service’s deletion. It fits an intentional, shared record of work. That is the purpose of an AI brain, rather than a reason to retain every conversation.

Keep training, retention, personalization, and identity as separate review questions whenever a tool or setting changes. The AI governance library covers the wider choices about authorized tools and human review.

Questions people ask.

Does the training exclusion depend on choosing Unpersonalized?

No. OpenAI says temporary conversations are not used to improve models while they remain temporary, whether or not personalization is chosen.

Can I change personalization after the conversation starts?

OpenAI’s Temporary Chat guide says the choice must be made before the conversation begins and cannot be changed once it starts.

Does disabling training remove conversations from history?

No. Model-improvement controls and chat history are separate. Saved chats need to be deleted separately when you want to remove them.

Will fenbs automatically preserve a temporary conversation?

No. fenbs does not import ChatGPT chats. Add only the approved project information you intentionally want to retain.
