AI Memory Plugins: What to Check Before Connecting One

Choose an AI memory plugin by what it saves, where that information goes, and whether you can correct it. Use this checklist to test a tool before giving it real work.

An AI memory plugin saves information from your work and makes some of it available to a later AI session. The best choice is the one whose capture, retrieval, correction, and removal you can explain before connecting it. A plugin that remembers more can still be a poor fit if you cannot tell which project its memories belong to.

Start by naming what you want remembered: personal preferences, selected research, or the current state of a project. Tools like fenbs keep project tasks, decisions, and progress outside a browser plugin, giving connected assistants a shared work record. That is a different job from quietly collecting everything you type.

What should a memory plugin actually save?

Useful memory changes a later answer in a way you intended. A preference such as “use short paragraphs” can apply across projects. A decision such as “the client approved the smaller contact form” belongs to one project and needs an identifiable source. Treating those two records alike makes accidental reuse more likely.

Ask the tool to show its unit of memory. It might save complete conversations, highlighted excerpts, short extracted facts, or summaries you approve. Each choice has a cost. Complete conversations preserve detail but include discarded ideas. Extracted facts are easier to scan but can lose the qualification that made a statement accurate.

For example, “we may use blue if the client agrees” should not become “the brand color is blue.” A good trial includes that kind of conditional statement. You want to see whether the plugin preserves the condition, asks for confirmation, or silently promotes the suggestion into a lasting fact.

  • Save stable preferences separately from temporary project instructions.
  • Keep the source, project, and review date beside important facts.
  • Label proposals, decisions, completed checks, and unresolved questions differently.
  • Exclude sensitive information unless your organization has approved the tool and its handling of that information.

If your difficulty is understanding the underlying storage options, the AI memory database guide covers that separate question. For choosing a plugin, the first requirement is simpler: can you inspect exactly what it intends to remember?

Which approach fits the work you do?

Compare approaches before comparing product slogans. A browser helper can improve collection without providing reliable project memory. A shared work tool can preserve decisions without capturing browser pages. The distinction helps you avoid buying convenience in one part of the workflow while assuming the rest is included.

Obsidian documents Web Clipper (opens in a new tab) as a browser extension that saves selected web content to a local vault. That makes it a concrete capture option, not proof that another AI app automatically remembers the resulting notes. Inspect the connection between collection and reuse separately.

For a work record shared with colleagues and their assistants, the team memory guide explains the additional questions about common ownership. A personal collection can be excellent without answering those team questions.

What access does the plugin need?

Read the permissions before using a plugin on a work account. There is a meaningful difference between activating a tool on one chosen page and allowing it to operate across many sites. Ask why each requested capability is necessary for the task you want it to perform.

Chrome explains extension permissions (opens in a new tab), including site access and optional permissions. Use that explanation to interpret a permission request; do not judge solely by whether the permission warning sounds alarming. A broad request deserves a clear reason and a narrower setting when the product offers one.

Then follow the information after capture. Does it stay in browser storage, go to a service, reach a model provider, or move through several of those places? The place you read a memory is not necessarily the place that stores it. Ask which account owns the stored record and what happens when that account closes.

Use a separate test project containing invented material. Include an item that should remain private to that project and try asking for it from another project. A clean result does not certify the tool, but a wrong result exposes a problem before you have used real client information.

For project work, fenbs explains the shared record and member roles. Choose those roles deliberately; a shared record is useful when the appropriate people can access it, not simply when more information is available.

How fenbs helps

Keep reviewed work separate from collected conversations

Put the project goal, current tasks, and agreed rules in fenbs. Ask your connected assistant to read that context before starting and save progress before stopping. You get an explicit record of the work to review instead of relying on an unseen selection from a conversation.

Can you correct or remove a memory completely?

Try correction before you trust recall. Save a fictional delivery date, change it, and ask the same question in a fresh conversation. The tool should help you identify the current answer without leaving two equally authoritative versions. If it preserves history, the older version should be recognizable as older.

Next, remove a test record and investigate what that action means. Deleting a browser extension, disconnecting an AI app, removing a saved item, and closing a service account are different operations. Do not assume one action performs the others. Look for a vendor explanation of the stored copies and deletion process.

Built-in app memory is a useful reminder of that distinction. OpenAI explains that saved memories and chat history can be separate (opens in a new tab), so deleting a chat does not necessarily delete its saved memory. Apply the same careful questioning to an outside plugin rather than assuming all memory tools share one deletion model.

Also test an export. Open it without the extension and check whether meaningful labels, sources, and dates survive. An unreadable collection of identifiers is less useful than a small record another person can understand. Export quality matters most when the service becomes unavailable or your team changes tools.

How can you test a plugin without trusting its demo?

Make a small acceptance test using one fictional project. Keep a separate answer sheet with what should be remembered and what should stay uncertain. Run the same questions after a new chat, a changed fact, and a return to the project later. You are checking the workflow you will actually use.

  1. Save a stable project fact and a preference. Ask for both in a new chat and check which source the tool gives.
  2. Add a rejected suggestion. Ask what was decided and confirm the suggestion does not appear as an approval.
  3. Change the agreed next step. Check that the old next step is no longer presented as current.
  4. Use a second project with a similar name. Check for information crossing between the two.
  5. Remove a test memory, export the remaining records, and inspect the export outside the product.

Track failures in plain language: “wrong project,” “old answer,” “missing source,” or “cannot find the saved item.” Do not count a fluent response as a pass. If the assistant cannot recover the answer, ask whether the plugin failed to save it, failed to supply it, or supplied it and the assistant ignored it.

The portable AI memory guide covers the wider handoff problem. Here the buying decision is whether this particular plugin reduces your repeated work without adding a correction burden you cannot maintain.

How to do this with fenbs

Choose fenbs when the memory you need is the work itself: what was agreed, what remains, and what the next assistant should do. Keep source collections in their existing home and bring over the useful conclusions intentionally. You do not need a complete transcript to make a good project handoff.

  1. Create a free account, free for one person with no credit card, and add one real project.
  2. Add the current tasks and record decisions a person has made. Mark ongoing instructions as rules and leave unanswered questions open.
  3. Use Integrations to connect a supported assistant through MCP, a standard way for an AI app to use an outside tool, with browser sign-in.
  4. Ask the assistant to read the project context before work and save the task status, checks, remaining uncertainty, and next step afterward.
  5. Start a fresh session and ask what is agreed and what remains. Correct the project record if that answer exposes an omission.

fenbs is not the right fit for automatic capture of every browser conversation or a personal archive of highlighted pages. It does not import ChatGPT chats. Use a purpose-built capture tool when collection is the main need, and keep only the project information you choose to share in fenbs.

How fenbs helps

Make the next assistant read the same project

Save the current tasks, decisions, and Where we left off in fenbs before changing AI apps. Connect the next supported app and ask it to read that record. The handoff then depends on saved project work rather than whether a browser plugin follows you.

When should you keep a simpler setup?

Keep a short project note if you have one assistant, a small amount of context, and no recurring handoff problem. The best memory system can be the one you reliably review. Adding automatic capture to an already clear workflow may create more material to inspect without improving your next answer.

Consider a plugin when repeated collection is the bottleneck. Consider a shared work record when repeated explanation and conflicting project state are the bottleneck. Those are different reasons to change tools, and identifying yours makes a trial easier to judge.

Before committing to a setup, return to the memory tools hub and compare the responsibilities you still need covered. Keep the first trial narrow: one project, a few memories, and a clear correction test. Expand only after you understand how the saved record reaches the next conversation.

Questions people ask.

Does installing an extension increase the model’s memory capacity?

Not by itself. An extension can store information outside the conversation and provide selected material later. Whether that material is used depends on the extension, its connection, and the assistant.

Should I allow a memory helper on every website?

Grant access that matches the task. Check whether the product can work on selected sites or after a deliberate action, and understand why broader access is requested before allowing it.

Is uninstalling a memory plugin enough to delete its records?

Do not assume so. A service may hold information separately from the browser extension. Follow the vendor’s deletion process and check which records and accounts it covers.

Can I use a clipper and a shared work record together?

Yes. A clipper can hold selected reference material while a separate project record holds approved decisions, tasks, and progress. Give important facts a clear current home to avoid conflicting copies.
