AI Context Overflow: Reduce Input Without Losing the Work

A context-limit error means the next request needs less input or a different task boundary. Save the current state, remove bulk, and resume with the information that matters.

AI context overflow happens when a request exceeds the amount of information a model or app can handle in its working context. Recover by saving the current task state, removing input that the next step does not need, and leaving room for the response and any further tool results.

Do not treat an oversized conversation as the only copy of your work. fenbs can preserve tasks, approved decisions, and Where we left off outside the model's window. That gives you a way to restart with the essential state instead of trying to squeeze the entire history into another request.

What should you do when a context-limit error appears?

  1. Read the exact error and confirm that it concerns context size, rather than a usage quota, temporary service failure, or file restriction.
  2. Preserve the current files and a short factual note about the task. If the assistant cannot respond, write the note yourself.
  3. Identify the largest unnecessary input: old conversation turns, repeated documents, broad tool output, or unrelated attachments.
  4. Retry with one bounded task and only its relevant instructions, sources, and current-state record.
  5. Check the resumed output against the saved state before allowing further changes.

If an action might already have run, inspect its result before retrying. An interrupted conversation does not tell you whether a file changed or an outside action completed. Recovery should avoid repeating an action solely because its confirmation did not appear in chat.

How is overflow different from other limits?

A model's working context is different from how many requests an account may make. Waiting can help with some temporary usage restrictions, but it does not make the same oversized input smaller. Likewise, a file upload restriction may apply before the model receives the document.

Match the repair to the limit
SymptomWhat it may meanWhat to check
The request says its context is too longThe supplied material exceeds the applicable context allowanceInput size, history, tool output, and response allowance
The answer stops before completingAn output limit or another interruption may have occurredThe app's stop reason and whether more work is safe to request
A request is refused after many recent callsA usage or rate restriction may applyThe provider's exact error and account guidance
An attachment cannot be acceptedA file size, format, or upload restriction may applyThe file restriction separately from the model's context

A context window is the material the model can use for a response. Anthropic documents (opens in a new tab) how system instructions, conversation messages, tool results, and output contribute. The size of the newest message alone therefore does not explain whether a request will fit.

Which information should you remove first?

Remove bulk that does not change the next decision. Common candidates include a full search listing when you only need two results, repeated copies of the same document, and extensive logs when one error and its surrounding lines explain the problem. Keep a reference to the full source so you can retrieve more if needed.

Keep approved constraints, the precise question, and evidence needed to check the answer. Do not delete a requirement merely because it is old. Age and authority are different: a short approval from the start of a project may still control today's work.

If you need to turn a long conversation into a smaller account of the work, use the separate context compression guide. Here the immediate goal is a request that can complete safely. A successful retry should still have the facts needed to satisfy the task, not simply fewer words.

How do you leave enough room for the next response?

Plan for more than the initial question. A task that reads several documents may add those results to the working input, then need space to produce its answer. Break that task into inspection, a reviewed finding, and the next action when a single request becomes too large.

If you build an API workflow, count the actual request for the model you intend to use. Anthropic's token-counting documentation (opens in a new tab) describes preflight counting and notes that the count is an estimate. A token is a small unit of model input or output, so a character count is only a rough substitute.

Avoid assuming that a nearly full request can still produce a long deliverable. Follow the provider's current rules for input and output, and keep room for the type of work you request. The right allowance depends on the task, rather than a universal percentage that every model shares.

How fenbs helps

Keep essential state outside an oversized session

Save the task's actual progress, relevant human decisions, and unfinished checks in fenbs. Where we left off gives the next connected assistant a continuation point after you start fresh. Review the record against the working files before the next assistant resumes changes.

What should a smaller replacement session receive?

Give it one objective, the controlling rules, the present artifact location, and the next verification step. Say what has already been done, which checks passed, and what you still do not know. Link to source documents rather than reproducing all of them when only a small part is needed immediately.

For example, a designer could provide the current page copy, the approved audience, and the requested change to the contact section. The assistant does not need every earlier rejected headline to make that change. It does need the rule that the client has approved the other sections.

A request can fit and still use its input poorly; the context rot guide addresses that separate problem. A saved AI handoff helps you restart from a verified state, but the replacement session must still inspect evidence and follow the task limits.

How to do this with fenbs?

  1. Create a free account and create a task for the result you need to resume.
  2. Record the task's current state and plan. Separate completed work from untested work and unresolved questions.
  3. Record the person's approved choices in Decisions and rules, and keep source references with the relevant project notes.
  4. Connect your AI app and ask it to read project context, then retrieve only the sources needed for its next step.
  5. After verifying that step, save progress and Where we left off before beginning another large input-heavy task.

fenbs is free for one person, with no credit card. Its context workflow keeps the work available across sessions, but it does not enlarge the context window, change provider limits, or automatically import your old chats. For a single oversized document that needs no ongoing task record, splitting the document may be all you need.

How can you prevent another overflow?

Limit broad retrieval, save useful findings as you go, and check the size of a large input before sending it. Set a task boundary before adding another collection of documents to an already long session. Keep the complete sources outside the prompt so you can inspect them again without carrying them through every turn.

After recovery, note which input caused the problem and which smaller task succeeded. That gives the next session a practical lesson instead of a vague warning to use less context. The context engineering guides cover related ways to organize what an assistant receives.

Questions people ask.

Does waiting clear an oversized request?

Waiting does not reduce the size of the request. Read the exact error: a temporary usage restriction and a context-size error require different responses.

Will a larger context model solve every overflow?

A model with more capacity may accept more input, subject to the app and provider rules. You still need relevant sources, enough room for the work, and checks that the result follows the instructions.

Should I delete old files to make more context space?

The source files can stay where they are. Reduce what you send to the model or what the app loads into the conversation, while preserving references to the complete sources.

Can a short message exceed the limit?

Yes, if the request also includes a large conversation history, documents, instructions, or tool results. Inspect the complete input rather than just the last message.
